But a breeze kicked up so the rain was starting to blow in a little bit. I was trying to decide if I wanted to stay there or head over to the bridge. I fell asleep thinking about it, so that tells you how cozy it is in there.

Then, a little after ten, something woke me up. I heard somebody walking around by the game shop. I told you. I’m a pretty light sleeper. I sat up and looked around the corner. That’s when I saw Rocky.” “Rocky,” I said. “For the record, do you mean the defendant, Richard Felix?” “Sure do.” “How do you know it was Rocky?” “Well, I didn’t know his name. Not until later. But he was this skinny, grubby little guy with stringy hair. He wore a shiny purple windbreaker and ripped jeans.

He came around the corner and passed right in front of me.” “Did you speak to him?” “No, ma’am. I just watched him. I figured he was up to no good.” “Why do you think that?” “Just couldn’t think of a good reason why anybody’d be out there that time of day.” “What happened next?” “That boy, the one sitting right there at that defense table.

Rocky. I watched him walk right up to Deputy Black’s car. He approached it on the driver’s side. He tapped on the window. Deputy Black rolled his window down … well … I guess you don’t roll ’em anymore … so that’s just an expression. But he opened his window and he and Rocky started talking.”

“Could you hear what they were saying?” “No. Just muffled voices.” “Could you hear either of their tones of voice?” “No.” “Okay. Then what did you see?” “Rocky kind of leaned into the window. Got real close to Deputy Black. They talked. I wanna say it was for only a minute or two. Then Rocky stood up straight. He pulled out a gun and he shot Deputy Black. I saw the flash of light from the gunshot. I heard it crack. I saw Deputy Black slump over in his seat.

Then Rocky ran away.” “What did you do?” “I was in my pallet by then. Scared out of my wits. I pulled the covers over my head and tried not to breathe.

No part of this book may be reproduced or transmitted in any form or by any means, electronic or mechanical including photocopying, recording, or by any information storage and retrieval system, without the written permission of the author or publisher, except where permitted by law or for the use of brief quotations in a book review. The judge’s bench sprawled across the whole back wall. When I stepped inside, I swear the aisle grew longer with every step I took. Darryl followed me inside. He slid his key back into his pocket. If my request to come inside early after the lunch break was unusual, he didn’t let on. I walked to the end of the gallery, my heels echoing off the marble floor. With no carpet anywhere, the room was drafty with hollow acoustics. It felt cold and ominous and the closer I got to the empty jury box, the more I regretted my decision to walk in here alone.

“You want my advice?” Darryl asked. I wasn’t sure I did. But he’d been Judge Vivian Saul’s bailiff for nearly twenty years, I was told. If I needed tips from anyone, it would be him. Darryl leaned against the defense table on the far end of the room. My table, on the prosecution’s side, was closest to the jury. Somebody, somewhere, hundreds of years ago decided that was an advantage as the State had the burden of proof.

This is a short excerpt from the opening of “” by Unknown, quoted for review and introduction purposes.
