I have also informed the twelve warriors who will stay behind to protect the village.\u201d It had dawned on me that the settlement and castle would be left unattended during our time at the emperor\u2019s palace, and I needed strong and trustworthy men to stay behind and protect our home. Gwen and Kryze had put together an assortment of snacks, and the Tullia-inspired charcuterie boards were becoming one of my favorite meals. \u201cThe troops from Lydmark, and obviously Castilan, will meet us in Armedus, too,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

I need some of you to stand back and stay on Owain\u2019s ship.\u201d \u201cWho\u2019s going on the battlefield?\u201d Asha asked. \u201cYou.\u201d I bit the inside of my cheek, and my gaze drifted around the table to meet each expectant look.<\/p>\n

\u201cAndamora, Gwen, Akoni, and of course, Tevai.\u201d \u201cI will fly over,\u201d Tevai said in her usual flat tone, \u201cand I will tear their heads off with my teeth.\u201d \u201cWhoa.\u201d Nora\u2019s eyes widened. \u201cBahdir,\u201d I said, \u201cyou\u2019ll be going on King Lavino\u2019s ship with Carl and the other magic-holders.\u201d I glanced over at the crew who\u2019d been quietly listening for the last thirty minutes. Carl gave me a nod of acknowledgement, and Jacosa flashed me a gleeful grin like we were in middle school and I\u2019d just told her that her crush liked her back.<\/p>\n

Lord Owain stared at me with a frantic gaze. His hair was disheveled from riding his horse from Lydmark, his thick beard was unkempt, and he bit the inside of his cheek as if he was holding himself back from crying. \u201cMy father has successfully found Lady Ellaria a husband\u2026\u201d Owain repeated and scoffed. It came out in an angry puff of air like it was punctuating a dark joke. \u201cShe is being shipped off at the end of next month to marry\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Owain\u2019s nostrils flared in anger, and his jaw clenched. \u201cEmperor Constantine.\u201d \u201cHe can\u2019t do that!\u201d Nora burst out in frustration. \u201cCan\u2019t your sister just say no?\u201d \u201cIt doesn\u2019t work like that, unfortunately.\u201d Gwen pursed her lips, and her eyebrows arched over her doe eyes with empathy. \u201cI\u2019m afraid Lady Gwen is correct,\u201d Owain said. \u201cMatters like these\u2026 It\u2019s my father\u2019s decision, not hers.\u201d \u201cThat\u2019s so wrong.\u201d Asha shook her head in a mixture of disappointment and disdain. My second-in-command took a step forward to stand next to me. Her arms were crossed over her chest, but it looked more like she was hugging herself.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow is Lady Ellaria doing?\u201d she asked in a gentle tone. \u201cShe is\u2026\u201d Owain chewed his lower lip. \u201cShe has been better, but she is worried.\u201d \u201cWe won\u2019t let them get away with this,\u201d I said, and it was a promise.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
