\u2018Maybe she wasn\u2019t a good picker?\u2019 he suggested. He had sometimes thought it about himself. \u2018Or didn\u2019t meet the right person at the right time. There\u2019s always that. Still, it\u2019s all a gamble, isn\u2019t it?\u2019 said Tessa. \u2018What did your aunt do with her time?\u2019 Patrick asked. The dead woman was not at all real to him. She had owned some good bits of furniture and some charming ornaments. Various pictures were stacked against the wall of the living-room; he had not looked at them, but from what he had seen of her possessions her taste was good, and she was no pauper.<\/p>\n

\u2018She had no career, had she?\u2019 \u2018Not now. She did work in an antique shop once, but she gave it up. She took her poodle for walks \u2013 went shopping \u2013 had her hair done. That sort of thing. Sounds awful, doesn\u2019t it?\u2019 said Tessa cheerfully. It did. \u2018No satisfying occupation? No hobby?\u2019 \u2018I think she liked the antique shop. I don\u2019t know why she gave it up.\u2019<\/p>\n

Patrick nodded at the pictures, whose backs faced them. \u2018Was she keen on art? Are those any good?\u2019 \u2018I shouldn\u2019t think so. Have a look at them.\u2019 They were oil paintings of dark, moorland landscapes. At any minute Heathcliff or Cathy would come marching into view, Patrick thought, inspecting the sixth one. He tapped the back of it; it sounded very solid. \u2018Hm,\u2019 he said. \u2018Pity, isn\u2019t it?<\/p>\n

I might have sold them for thousands of pounds,\u2019 said Tessa. \u2018As it is, I\u2019ll be lucky if I can give them away.\u2019 \u2018They\u2019re certainly not up to much,\u2019 Patrick said. \u2018But I expect someone will buy them. Well, thank you for putting up with me. We\u2019ll meet\u2019Yes.\u2019 Tessa walked with him to the gate.<\/p>\n

During World War II she saw service in the Women\u2019s Royal Naval Service as a driver. In 1945, she married, but it was only to last some ten years, although there were two children; a son and daughter. Her childhood interest in literature was re-enforced by five years living close to Stratford-upon-Avon and she also worked variously as a bookseller and as a librarian in two Oxford Colleges, being the first woman ever to work in that of Christ Church.<\/p>\n

She is widely travelled and has a particular interest in both Greece and Russia. Margaret Yorke\u2019s first novel was published in 1957, but it was not until 1970 that she turned her hand to crime writing. There followed a series of five novels featuring Dr. Patrick Grant, an Oxford don and amateur sleuth, who shares her own love of Shakespeare.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
