Lucy asked as we sat in her car, looking at the Winthrop Real Estate Agency. I shrugged. \u201cThere\u2019s only one way to find out.\u201d \u201cLet\u2019s go, then,\u201d she said. We got out of the car. The Winthrop Real Estate Agency was one of the largest and probably most successful real estate agencies in the area. I wasn\u2019t sure how many people worked there, but I thought there had to be at least five or six real estate agents.<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t think Jeremy sold houses anymore; rather, he was the businessman behind the business. I pushed the door open and was greeted with a blast of cool air. The day had turned warm, and it felt good on my face. I smiled at the blonde at the front desk. She looked up at me and flashed movie-star white teeth. \u201cGood afternoon, ladies. Do you have an appointment?\u201d I shook my head. \u201cNo, we don\u2019t have an appointment, but we were wondering if Mr. Winthrop was around.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her brow furrowed slightly. \u201cMr. Winthrop? Yes, he\u2019s here, but he doesn\u2019t see visitors without an appointment. Can I make one for you for another day?\u201d \u201cWe\u2019d rather just see if he\u2019s available,\u201d I said, glancing around the office. Everything was neat and tidy, and there were certificates of achievement on the back wall. \u201cOh, I\u2019m sorry, but as I said, he doesn\u2019t take visitors without appointments. But I would be happy to set one up for you.\u201d She started tapping on her keyboard. \u201cHe\u2019s available next Friday.\u201d \u201cIs he with a client now?\u201d<\/p>\n

Lucy asked. The young woman smiled, but I could see annoyance building around the edges. \u201cI\u2019m sorry, maybe I could just take your names and phone numbers? I\u2019ll make sure he gets them with the message that you stopped by. Or we can make an appointment.\u201d I sighed. I had hoped we would get to talk to him for a bit. Making an appointment made our questioning seem more official, and we were anything but official. Just as I was going to tell her not to worry about it, I heard a door down the hallway close, and in a moment, Jeremy stepped out of the hallway.<\/p>\n

I smiled. \u201cHello, Jeremy. How are you doing?\u201d At the sound of my voice, he looked up, and a puzzled look crossed his face for a moment. He smiled. \u201cGood afternoon.\u201d He glanced at Lucy. \u201cAllie. Lucy. Don\u2019t tell me the two of you are looking for new houses?\u201d \u201cNot exactly,\u201d I said, glancing at the blonde. She seemed perturbed that we were going to get to speak to him anyway, despite her efforts. \u201cI really hate to bother you, Jeremy, but do you have a few minutes?\u201d<\/p>\n

He hesitated, then nodded. \u201cSure, I guess I\u2019ve got a few minutes.<\/p>\n

Alec looked up at me, one eyebrow raised, his black hair shining beneath the light that hung over our table. \u201cWhat are you talking about? How long have you been married to me? Don\u2019t you know this is how it goes? You say you want to do something, and I think about it for a while. A long while.\u201d He grinned. I rolled my eyes. \u201cLet\u2019s go on a vacation this year.<\/p>\n

We never get to go anywhere.\u201d Alec was a detective with the local police force, and it seemed like something always got in the way, preventing us from taking time to just enjoy ourselves. He took a sip of his iced tea and set the glass back on the table. \u201cAll right then, we\u2019ll take a vacation. How does next month sound? I\u2019ll put in the request tomorrow.\u201d I nodded.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat sounds great. Where are we going to go? Don\u2019t tell me you don\u2019t have any ideas, because I don\u2019t believe you.\u201d He shrugged. \u201cI don\u2019t have any place in mind. Honestly, as long as I get to spend time with you, that\u2019s the only thing that\u2019s important to me.\u201d I smiled. \u201cAren\u2019t you the most wonderful husband in the whole world?<\/p>\n

I only want to spend time with you, too. Let\u2019s go someplace fun. What about Hawaii? Or Italy? We love Italian food. We should go to Italy.\u201d I could just picture us taking a ride on a gondola while a man sang to us in Italian. My long, curly red hair would fan out over my shoulders as I rested my head on Alec\u2019s shoulder.<\/p>\n
