teacher wasn’t in the car on the way home. First, I would have failed the class, and second, I would have had to wipe off my mom’s upholstery where he messed his pants. I wondered if Intrepid had called the cops. They might be on the phone to the DMV right now, running Mom’s license plate number, because I was stupid enough to write it on the parking permission slip.<\/p>\n

There might be a black and white waiting in our driveway by the time I got home. Some jerk in a Volvo station wagon blasted his horn at me just because I was driving in two lanes at once. I scowled at the driver and tried shooting lightning bolts out my eyes at him, on the off-chance Victor had injected me with a top- secret serum to turn me into a mutant superhero named HellCath who would wear black Levis with sharpened buttons and a severe spandex tuxedo and haunt the BART stations at night on the watch for evil-doers.<\/p>\n

No lightning bolts. Rats. I parked three blocks from my house so I could make sure there weren’t cops there waiting for me. I sat at the curb hyperventilating for a while and then changed into another one of my Impenetrable Disguises. The dressy black skirt was a bit of a problem.<\/p>\n

Since I didn’t keep a spare pair of pants in my glove compartment, like Easy Sally Thurston, I had to work toward the black skirt, instead of away from it. I Gothed out my eyes with gobs of eye-shadow, and used some drawing ink as emergency black nail polish.<\/p>\n

I shucked the navy choir blazer and turned my shirt around so the lurid Minotaur painting was face front. Then dug around in the Mercury’s upholstery until I found a couple of hair ties and did some of those stubby little Bjork pigtails that stand up from the top of your head like sea anemone tentacles. I inspected the final product in the mirror, hoping there wasn’t much resemblance to the fake Bernice Lau who had presented herself at Intrepid two hours before.<\/p>\n

I thought about using a lipstick to give myself some fake zits, but they didn’t look very convincing, and anyway I didn’t want everyone in my neighborhood thinking my skin was gross. I did a quick perv check to make sure the sidewalks were empty, then sunk down in the front seat and wiggled out of my pantyhose.<\/p>\n

Forgot about math test this afternoon. Mom came in from her graveyard shift while I was getting ready for school. I was scratching this little itchy, sore spot inside my elbow, when all of a sudden Mom grabbed my wrist so hard with her strong nurse hands that her knuckles turned white.<\/p>\n

“What is this?” “You’re hurting me!” She tapped the itchy spot. “You think I don’t know a needle track? You think I’m that stupid?” “Oh, great. Now you think I’m shooting drugs.” It was so unfair. “Have you been drinking again? Do you know me at all?” The contempt in her eyes was like a slap. “I suppose you’re going to say you got a shot from the school nurse? I can call her, Cathy. Think fast.<\/p>\n

Pick the right lie.” “Screw you!” I yelled, and I slammed out the front door. She stood on the porch and yelled, so the whole world could hear. “I see kids just like you in the ER every night. You want to flunk out of school? Be an artist? Here’s a bulletin from the real world, Cathy.<\/p>\n

You know who bought this house? I did. Your Dad got to lie around in his bathrobe all day painting because I made the money. So if you want to flunk out, hey, fine, be my guest. I just hope your latest boyfriend can keep you in style after you graduate, ’cause I sure won’t.” \u2014> Should have said, “No fear there, Mom\u2014the boyfriend just dumped me.” <\/flashback> \\t> vm \u00ab.U. fl .*\u2022< Now it's after school.<\/p>\n

Mom’s still sleeping. I’ll heas- sec. We’re supposed to work on this big research^aper for Biology, but truth is, I just don’t want to be in the house-when Mom wakes up. i555rrRmL au^uiow III HV^l I’m never going to let myself get that bitter. Never, never, never. But what about my arm ? \\ There’s a little bruise, just inside my left elbow, with a tiny dot in the t middle.
