Her features were strong, her eyes sharp, and because she was so striking, I was sure I had never met her before.<\/p>\n<p>Alaric looked the same as I\u2019d last seen him, though maybe a little more disheveled and blue-tinted in the strange light. \u201cWait\u2014\u201d I glanced around the room\u2026 which wasn\u2019t really a room. I didn\u2019t see any walls, but I didn\u2019t see anything else either. It was dark, and the hazy blue glow stretched on as far as I could see.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWait,\u201d I said again, taking a step back. \u201cWhere are we?\u201d Alaric cleared his throat, lacing his hands before him. \u201cForgive me for the imposition, but only in dreams can we speak without anyone spying on us.\u201d My wide eyes flicked to the woman beside him as realization set in. \u201cYou have dream magic?\u201d I asked. It was rare, but not so rare so as to be unheard of.<\/p>\n<p>According to my mother, my great, great aunt had dream magic. The woman nodded, but didn\u2019t speak. Her eyes were a little tight around the edges, like it was taking a great deal of concentration to hold the meeting together. I looked at Alaric. \u201cI\u2019m sleeping?\u201d His brow furrowed. \u201cI would assume so. Unless someone hit you over the head.\u201d I winced. The locket. It must have zapped me so hard that I passed out. Which meant everyone would be trying to revive me and we might not have much time.<\/p>\n<p>I stepped closer. \u201cWe don\u2019t have long, so whatever you need to say, say it.\u201d Fortunately, Alaric didn\u2019t ask questions. \u201cA colleague of mine was murdered. Beatrice Romero. I believe it has something to do with the plague of darkness sweeping through the Ministry. The quality of the light was a sign of that, along with the glowing pink bulbs and giant cut-out hearts bedecking Main Street. Glitter was everywhere, and we would all be finding it in the darnd- est of places for weeks to come. That\u2019s right, love was in the air, or at least the commercialized holiday version of it.<\/p>\n<p>But who was I to complain? I put another heart-shaped sugar cookie into the display. The icing was pink, the sprinkles a darker pink with a hint of dreaded glitter. I did enjoy a good theme, and at least the edible glitter dissolved in water and wasn\u2019t a hazard to the environment. Other cookies were shaped like white envelopes sealed with red icing hearts, and red roses with 3D petals painted on by Elliot, who had a lot more patience than me for the small artistic touches.<\/p>\n<p>The rest of the case was already stocked with cherry-filled donuts with vanilla icing, and rose and strawberry scones with candied rose petals. I had even added a dash of red food coloring to the usual bagels and chocolate chip cookies to give them a pinkish hue.
