In the blink of an eye, she\u2019d be heading off to school, her independence growing with each passing day. \u201cHow are things going?\u201d Sarah, Lilly\u2019s mom, asked as she approached, her arms outstretched for a hug. \u201cThey\u2019re going great,\u201d I said, standing to hug her back. \u201cHow\u2019s work?\u201d Sarah shrugged, a familiar, tired-but-happy smile on her face. \u201cIt\u2019s great. Most days, anyway,\u201d she added with a laugh. I knew she and Thad loved their teaching jobs at the high school, though I could only imagine the challenges they faced daily.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know how you both do it,\u201d I said. \u201cTeenagers must keep you on your toes.\u201d \u201cThey do,\u201d Sarah said, chuckling as she tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear. \u201cBut it\u2019s so rewarding, too. Even the tough days have their moments.\u201d I turned as Thad stepped into the room. A broad smile spread across my face as I pulled him into a hug.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s been forever since I\u2019ve seen you,\u201d I said, squeezing him tightly. He laughed, his voice warm and familiar. \u201cMom, it\u2019s only been two weeks. I live just down the street. You can come over whenever you want.\u201d I shrugged, giving him a playful look. \u201cI know. But maybe you could all move in with us?<\/p>\n

There\u2019s plenty of room, and I wouldn\u2019t mind having Lilly running around here all the time.\u201d Thad laughed again, shaking his head. \u201cMom, you do not want us moving in. Trust me. You\u2019d regret it the second Lilly started drawing on your walls or spilling juice on your rugs.\u201d<\/p>\n

I sighed dramatically. \u201cOh, I don\u2019t know about that. I wouldn\u2019t mind a little chaos.\u201d The idea wasn\u2019t entirely a joke. Alec and I had put so much love and effort into restoring our old house, turning it into a warm, inviting home with room for everyone. I loved the thought of filling it with family, of mornings spent in the kitchen together and evenings filled with laughter. But I knew better than to push. They needed their own space, and I respected that.<\/p>\n

Still, it didn\u2019t hurt to remind them that the door was always open. My black cat, Dixie, moseyed into the living room, stopping to rub against the corner of the couch, his eyes on Lilly.<\/p>\n

I glanced over my shoulder at my best friend, Lucy Gray, who trudged along behind me. Her cheeks were flushed from the cold, and her breath came out in frosty puffs. \u201cAnd I do mean need,\u201d she emphasized, tightening the scarf around her neck. \u201cI\u2019m probably going to need a muffin, too, just to make it through the morning.\u201d<\/p>\n

I chuckled, pulling my coat tighter. \u201cI don\u2019t blame you. I could really use some coffee, too.\u201d My stomach growled in agreement. The bitter February wind sliced through my layers, making me wish I\u2019d worn a thicker coat. It was two weeks away from Valentine\u2019s Day, and Sandy Harbor had been blanketed with fresh snow daily for the past week. My boots crunched over the icy sidewalk, the sound echoing in the quiet morning air. I sighed, watching my breath swirl up like a cloud.<\/p>\n

Spring felt like a distant dream, a season that existed in some far-off world. Here in Maine, it wasn\u2019t uncommon to see snow through March\u2014or even April. In fact, it had snowed in May the first year I had moved here. Talk about being welcomed to my new home. Still, a girl could hope for an early spring.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
