She relayed the dinner date with Tal and the apparent love of his life, Patrie—who, no, she was not jealous of because she and Tal were a one-time thing as Harriet well knew—and how that made Evie rethink her outlook on potentially sharing her life with someone, which clearly couldn’t be Ash even though the sex was amazing.

Harriet tapped her empty glass and got up. “I’m getting the bottle and another glass. This is serious.” Harriet returned within moments, filled a glass for Evie, and replenished her own. “So…what do you think?” Sharing the events of the past week or so lifted the weight, but it hadn’t made it any clearer in her mind. “Okay. Number one: you can’t know whether or not Ash is a serious contender for your future.

You went out on a date that turned into sex after fifteen minutes. If you want to know whether Ash could fit into your world properly, you need to spend some time in her company and not in her pants.” “But—” Harriet held up her other hand and shook her head. “No interrupting my flow.” Evie smiled and held up her hands in mock apology. “Number two: you’ve already dismissed Ash as a serious contender based solely on her age, which is ageist, short sighted, and stereotyping.

Three things I wouldn’t have expected from you as a psychiatrist.” Harriet inclined her head and pointed a finger toward Evie. “Don’t do it.” Evie relaxed back into her chair. Perhaps discussing this with Harriet hadn’t been such a good idea after all. “Bossy britches.” “Zip it. Number three: it’s great news that Tal has found someone he loves.

He’s a great guy, a wonderful dad, and he deserves some happiness.” Evie nodded. She certainly couldn’t argue with that. “And lastly, number four: you need to analyse your sudden motivation to find a life partner. Had you got it into your head that you didn’t need one or that you didn’t deserve one? Had you become so focussed on being a mother that you’ve forgotten how to be a woman and thus, what you need as a woman?” “I thought I was supposed to be the psychiatrist and you were supposed to be the global consultant-come-international spy?”

Harriet grinned. “I do love that you think me capable of leading such an exciting, double life.” She took another long sip from her glass. “This wine is absolutely delicious. We should be eating a medium rare steak with it, though. Perry’s deliver now, you know.”

© 2020 by Helena Harte. All rights reserved. Keep believing. 1kitap1.com/en Chapter One Ash looked at the dashboard clock for the fifth time since she’d pulled up and parked. 1:30 p.m. Still another half hour before she could go into the Hound Hotel. The crunch of gravel drew her attention to a fancy Audi pulling into the car park. A new model TT RS Roadster.

Wow. What she wouldn’t give to own a car like that. The car door swung open and two shapely legs in skinny jeans and block heels swung out, moving Ash’s attention from the car to its owner. The lady eased out of the car ever so elegantly, pushed her door closed, and made her way to the main reception. Every inch of her screamed sophistication and intelligence. Ash wasn’t sure exactly how that looked if anyone asked her to explain it, but that woman was the definition.

Her hair was cut slightly below her chin in a sleek one length bob that added to her put-together look. She’d tucked one side behind her ear, giving a glimpse of her face, but from this distance, Ash couldn’t make out any real detail other than she was late twenties, maybe early thirties. Ash shook her head. Older women had always floated her boat and this lady was no exception.

Ash lowered her window, but the cold rush of autumn air did little to cool her jets. Should she shout hello? She rested her arm on the door sill and was temporarily distracted by the small ball of fluffy moss growing on the ragged, rubber trim.

This is a short excerpt from the opening of “” by Unknown, quoted for review and introduction purposes.
