\u201cReady?\u201d Ares asked, his voice low and lethal. Nyx inclined her head. \u201cAlways.\u201d Athena\u2019s spear shimmered and split into three illusions. One cut the air; another grazed her arm before Nyx found the true strike and parried. Clever. Athena fought with intellect itself. Ares crashed in, an avalanche of flame and steel.<\/p>\n

He slammed into her, sending her skidding across the sand. \u201cCome on, fury,\u201d Ares growled. \u201cYou\u2019re holding back.\u201d Nyx gritted her teeth. \u201cFine.\u201d She vanished into shadows, reappearing behind Athena and tapped her breastplate with her blade. \u201cClever thinking,\u201d Athena said, approving. Ares didn\u2019t wait. He lunged again, sword whistling through the air. Flame roared; Nyx split it with lightning, heat licking her skin. \u201cStop reacting,\u201d Athena called from her side. \u201cAnticipate.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd stop defending,\u201d Ares barked. \u201cAttack.\u201d Trust yourself. Their voices overlapped. Nyx steadied herself, letting her heartbeat guide the rhythm. Then she moved. Lightning crackled around her body, speed blurring the edges as her dagger became a storm of strikes. She struck low, shadows binding Athena\u2019s ankles, then pivoted and kicked the goddess down. Ares laughed. \u201cShe\u2019s learning.\u201d \u201cApparently so,\u201d Athena said, brushing sand from her armour. \u201cQueen\u2019s luck.\u201d Nyx grinned, sweat-slick and breathless. \u201cWhy do people always say that when I win?\u201d Before Athena could reply, Ares was on her again.<\/p>\n

Two flaming blades. Every strike history and wrath. Nyx matched him with light and dark, magic singing in tandem. He roared, a true war-cry, magic-laced, and the ground trembled. \u201cAres!\u201d Athena snapped. \u201cThis isn\u2019t war.\u201d But Nyx didn\u2019t need mercy. She met the roar with lightning in her bones, shadows anchoring her feet. She leapt; their weapons collided in a stormburst that hurled them apart.<\/p>\n
