Rook leans against the frame, grinning like he knows a secret, like the world isn’t falling apart outside these walls.<\/p>\n

I blink up at him. \u201cHey, love,\u201d he says, as if it’s just another evening. \u201cThought I’d check in before you spiral all the way into despair. You’re coming out tonight.\u201d \u201cOut?\u201d I can’t help but snort and cross my arms over my chest. The idea seems so absurd. \u201cDid you hit your head, Rook? I can’t just leave\u2014not now, not with everything happening. You know it’s a warzone out there, right?\u201d I watch Rook as he ignores my words and strolls in, making himself at home in a rickety chair by the bed.<\/p>\n

He throws me a look that’s all challenge and no apology. \u201cRight. Because the fate of the world depends on you sitting here and staring at the wall. Come on, Aisling. One night. You need this.\u201d My head shakes before I can stop it, my hands clenching at my sides.<\/p>\n
