We call ‘em hard tack.” Rox guffawed loudly, and the table erupted in laughter. Tack rolled his eyes and returned to stirring his pot. Another wave crashed over the bow of the Westwind’s Wraith and knocked the ship wildly from side to side.

A loose barrel crashed along the hallway, and the planks of the ship groaned. Neima woke with a start and caught herself before she slid out of her bunk. The hammock above her was empty. Theo probably never came to bed and stayed topside to help the crew. The captain had insisted she go below when a harsh wind almost blew her over the side.

She was useless and in the way. The cabin door crashed open, and Theo entered, water dripping from his soaked clothing. He braced himself against the walls of the tiny cabin as the ship pitched sharply to the right. “What’s happening up there?” Neima yelped. “The worst storm I’ve ever seen. Captain Mac said to come down and tie myself in. It won’t get better for a while.” The ship groaned deeply in response to his words, and Neima’s stomach lurched.

She would rather be up in the storm than in the hold, feeling helpless. She grabbed a rain slicker off the closest hook and pulled open the door. Theo grabbed her arm. “Where are you going? There’s nothing you can do.” “I’m not waiting down here to drown.” He clung to her arm. “You can’t.” “I am.” She shook him off and slid into the hallway.

“I’m coming with you.” “No.” She pointed to the cabin. “Follow your captain’s orders.” “But . . .” “Now.” He nodded and retreated to his quarters. She rummaged through a storage cabinet and found a length of rope. It was too short to do much good, but long enough to secure herself to a pole or railing.

Copyright © 2026 by J.L. Both Joanna Pashdag and Esther Murray have been with me the entire journey, encouraging me along the way. My greatest support and guide has been Joanna, who listened to my original ideas, critiqued chapters, and taught me valuable lessons about discovering your story. This could not have happened without her. In addition, I owe a deep gratitude to my original beta readers, Teresa James and Sarah Ramos.

They reviewed the early drafts, and provided guidance and feedback. In addition, Sarah served as my sounding board, cheering squad, and editor. I also received encouragement and support from the members of Women Writing Other Worlds, whose purpose is to promote indie women fantasy authors. Lastly, my thanks to my wife, Diane Fritz, who has supported this crazy idea that I needed write a book, with an honorable mention to our cat Leo, who never failed to interrupt my time at the computer for a needed snuggle break.

1kitap1.com/en Map – Kingdom of Sigor Map – The Western Isles LYSIA 1.
