In its first half century, Apple has had three logos, four headquarters, and five CEOs. In 1976, Apple was two grungy guys named Steve hawking circuit boards. In 2026, its annual revenue approaches $400 billion a year—more than Meta, Netflix, and Intel combined. Is Apple even the same company it once was? Steve Jobs is a big part of the answer.

He was at Apple for less than half of its first 50 years, but most of Apple’s corporate throughlines can trace their origins to him: Simplicity, beauty, and elegant design. Making the whole widget. Focus on very few products. Closed systems. Secrecy. The formula seems to work. Today, 27 percent of the entire global population uses Apple products—2.2 billion people.

If they were a country, it would be the most populous in the world, bigger than India or China. In 1976, the two Steves were thrilled to sell 150 of those Apple I boards. In 2026, Apple sells 220 million iPhones a year, bringing in $1 million every 90 seconds. Those are impressive stats, but they become truly inconceivable next to the miracle that Apple exists at all. During the dark times without Steve Jobs, the company fell apart. At one point, less than six weeks from bankruptcy, its executives desperately tried to sell Apple, offering this once-revered brand at flea market prices.

Nobody would touch it. Everything was wrong. The products, the corporate structure, the distribution channel, the marketing, the board of directors, the bozo explosion within the ranks—all rotten. And then Jobs returned to Apple and fixed all of it in a single year.

This is a short excerpt from the opening of “” by Unknown, quoted for review and introduction purposes.
