Take the Renault 5, Nissan Micra and future Ford Fiesta: all three will be copy-paste underneath, leaving design as the great di\ufb00erentiator. It always was to some extent. When a car looks so right, we\u2019re usually able to forgive shortcomings in the engineering department (Alfa GTV anyone?), but it works the other way around, too. A total dog with some personality in the powertrain (cough, McLaren Senna) had a decent chance of success, but an EV doesn\u2019t have that to fall back on.<\/p>\n

Once you\u2019ve learned a few key stats about an electric car \u2013 usually power, range and price \u2013 the heavy lifting is done with the design. I\u2019ll be honest, when Ferrari \ufb01rst announced that Sir Jony Ive, the man who worked hand in hand with Steve Jobs to change the world as we knew it, was going to be designing its new EV inside and out, my heart dropped. As a product designer, Jony\u2019s unparalleled, but what could he possibly know about styling a car?<\/p>\n

It\u2019ll end up an amorphous blob on the outside and series of iPads inside, I thought. Well, I take it all back, because the way the new Ferrari Luce\u2019s interior fuses retro hints with futurism, and screens with physical, tactile switchgear, is brilliant. There\u2019s a clarity to the layout and a few theatrical moments (like the key being swallowed by the centre console) that are outstanding. And credit must go to Ferrari for breaking tradition, diverting the conversation and making the new Luce about design \ufb01rst and its electric powertrain second.<\/p>\n

Side note: I reserve the right to make a full U-turn on this in May when we get to see the exterior.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
