I should go. Hilda will be wondering where I am.\u2019 She turned to leave, but Bob gripped her arm, and she cried out in pain. She shook his hand away angrily and looked at his face. His eyes had narrowed with anger. \u2018You can\u2019t walk away from me, Hetty Lawson. She appraised it as she walked towards it. The windows sparkled and the door was freshly painted. And the front garden, although small, was magnificent. It was a riot of colour, with flowers spilling onto the path. She breathed in their sweet scent as she knocked on the door. When there was no reply, she opened the letter box. \u2018Stan? Are you in there?\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018Come in, Elsie,\u2019 he replied. She pushed open the door. Despite the warm day outside, the house felt cold. \u2018I\u2019m in the back room,\u2019 he called. Elsie walked along the hallway to a room at the back where a coal fire burned. She stood on the threshold, unsure how much further she should go. \u2018I called to see if you were all right,\u2019 she said.<\/p>\n

She thrust her hand into her handbag. \u2018And I brought the beef pie I promised. It\u2019ll taste better if you heat it.\u2019 She stepped forward and laid the pie in its paper bag on a sideboard. Stan was sitting at the kitchen table, in front of a large window that overlooked a garden at the back. The flowers here too caught Elsie\u2019s eye, and she moved forward for a closer look.<\/p>\n

\u2018Why, it\u2019s beautiful,\u2019 she said. \u2018Aye, it is that,\u2019 Stan replied. \u2018My garden\u2019s just about the only thing that gives me pleasure these days.\u2019 His dog Patch uncurled himself from under the table and stood to attention at Elsie\u2019s side. \u2018And Patch here, of course,\u2019 Stan added with a wry smile. \u2018Sit yourself down, Elsie.<\/p>\n

Would you like a cup of tea?\u2019 Elsie slid into a seat at the table and began to stroke Patch\u2019s head. \u2018I\u2019d love one, thank you. How are you feeling now?\u2019 Stan laid his hand on her shoulder. \u2018Thanks for asking, lass. It\u2019s good to know someone cares.\u2019 As he busied himself with a small kettle and teapot, Elsie turned to look at him properly.<\/p>\n

\u2018You\u2019ve got a bit more colour in your cheeks now,\u2019 she said. \u2018I\u2019m feeling better, lass. Today was a one-off. It\u2019ll never happen again.\u2019 \u2018I overheard the doc say that you weren\u2019t eating properly,\u2019 Elsie began softly. Stan took his time to reply, and when he did, he kept his gaze on his beloved garden.<\/p>\n
