Season have not yet got to know each other, but both the hostess and Camilla did plenty of introducing and it went with a swing. Mrs Kenward wrote in a special code well understood by her regular readers. For example, if a debutante was described as \u2018pretty\u2019 you could assume she was passably fair, but if the poor girl was described as \u2018spirited\u2019 you could take it she was as plain as they come. The Kenward report on the Shand bash for Camilla tells us all we need to know: Camilla was a nice-looking girl (not a beauty) and she and her mother worked like billy-o to get a slow-starting party moving \u2014 and succeeded.<\/p>\n

The party was held at Searcy\u2019s, 30 Pavilion Road, Knightsbridge, SW1, a fine Georgian house, traditionally appointed, conveniently located at the back of Harrods, and hired out by families whose own London homes were not large enough to accommodate the necessary numbers. Camilla had 150 guests: her parents remained in attendance throughout, but the other older guests, such as Mrs Kenward, departed by nine o\u2019clock, leaving the young ones to enjoy themselves.<\/p>\n

In her book about Camilla, the journalist Caroline Graham quotes a partygoer saying, \u2018It was a fairly raucous affair. Most of the coming-out cocktail parties were rather stiff and dull. But Camilla\u2019s was fun. She wore a lovely white dress and was the life and soul of the party. Everyone had such fun, the cocktails stretched on until eleven at night. Everyone got tipsy and Camilla was at the centre of it, throwing her head back telling bawdy jokes.<\/p>\n

They look quite apprehensive and their appearance \u2014 apart from Camilla\u2019s fringe and her favourite chandelier earrings \u2014 has a distinctly sedate, 1950s feel to it.<\/p>\n

Another partygoer \u2014 to whom I was directed by someone close to the Duchess \u2014 told me, \u2018It was a fun evening, I\u2019m sure, but I don\u2019t recall excessive tipsiness or bawdy jokes or anything like that.<\/p>\n
