Gorgeous. Alluring. Captivating. Her voice didn’t waver as she spoke. “I’m the one you want. Leave this man alone, and I will come with you.”

“No,” he grunted, struggling to sit when his back screamed in agony. Poisoner clutched her wound and backed up several steps, gasping breaths escaping her lips. She was injured. Charles could finish her off. But as he pushed himself to his knees, a hiss slipped through clenched teeth. Something was wrong. He didn’t know what. “Onto the horse,” Poisoner grunted, motioning with her head to one of the empty saddles.

“Quickly now.” Charles finally found his feet, swaying back and forth when his world tilted to one side and then the other. Emmaline took a single step forward. He made a grab for her but missed when lifting his arm ripped agony through his back. Poisoner hefted her sword up, effectively gaining the advantage against the much smaller weapon Emmaline carried. His nostrils flared with anger. He hadn’t gotten Emmaline this far just to lose now. Even if all the odds were stacked against him, even if he might lose in the end, he swore to protect her to his very last breath— A rock hit Poisoner squarely in the forehead.

She stumbled backward, only for several more rocks to hit her. War cries echoed from within the forest, and a blur of movement attacked his senses when people rushed out of the trees with axes and slingshots, attacking the remaining two living enemies. Charles took the moment to grab Emmaline and crush her against his chest, shielding her head within the safety of his arms to protect her from the rocks. He didn’t know if the newcomers were friends or foes.

But the rocks never touched them. The assault was focused on the two enemies, who, rather than fighting back, mounted their horses and fled. And when a second attack never came, he decided the others were friends. He held Emmaline at arm’s reach and searched her frantically for injuries. When he found none, anger welled within him. The anger of near loss. Of almost losing someone so precious to him that the thought stole the very air from his lungs. “Why did you come after me?”

he shouted as he struggled to stay on his feet. “Because I care about you, and I can’t leave you to fend for yourself!” He took her by the shoulders and squeezed. “And I can’t lose my wife again!” Her lips parted. He scrutinized the black carriage ahead, a sun painted on each side with yellow and orange paint—the symbol for Leonian royalty. Behind him, a guard grumbled to another guard. “How long is this going to take?

Surely, we’re at least halfway there.” “We’ve only been on the road for five hours.” The second guard hacked up a cough and spat to the side of the dirt path. “We’ve got twenty more to go. Not counting the stops.” Charles kept his mouth shut, knowing he’d glean more information by staying silent than chiming in. “Princess Isobel hasn’t stopped once,” the first guard said with a huff of annoyance. “Seems she’s more than thrilled to meet her betrothed.”

“The man is on his deathbed,” the second guard scoffed. “No doubt he’s trying for an heir before he dies. Otherwise, the throne will go to some unknown relation.” The relentless late-afternoon heat beat upon his helmet, trapping the warmth inside the metal prison. Perspiration dripped down his neck, and he broke the illusion that he was a statue wearing guard attire by lifting his hand to scratch beneath his chin. A week’s scruff brushed his fingers, giving him a more rugged appearance than his usual clean-shaven nobleman look.

He scratched his chin again, patiently reminding himself, It’s all for the assignment. He’d been through worse. Acting as a guard to a snobby princess was one of the easier assignments given to him. Of course, he’d never actually met the princess, only seen her at a distance.

This is a short excerpt from the opening of “” by Unknown, quoted for review and introduction purposes.
