Inside, she can hear Shona singing along to the pa-ra-pa-pa-pam chorus of Peace on Earth\/Little Drummer Boy.<\/p>\n<p>The girl is up a rickety ladder sticking a fallen paper-chain back into position with a nub of Blu Tack. Morag notices that Shona\u2019s stockings have holes all over them. She knows Shona well so she assumes these are intentional but she does wonder how on earth she puts them on. \u2018Do they pay you danger money for climbing ladders, Shona Morrison?\u2019 \u2018Oh Morag don\u2019t make me laugh \u2013 the left side wobbles as it is.<\/p>\n<p>Hold it will you?\u2019 Back on terra firma, Shona beams. \u2018You all done then, Morag? Came in just now asking for turkey.\u2019 \u2018On Christmas Eve?\u2019 \u2018Aye \u2013 seems they\u2019d forgotten the whole meal \u2013 she bought stuffing and gravy and two pots of trifle.<\/p>\n<p>I felt bad about the turkey; all I had was a packet of slices, or yours!\u2019 \u2018It\u2019s a wonder they didn\u2019t book at the hotel \u2013 we\u2019ve one table free now. Last minute cancellation.\u2019 \u2018I wouldn\u2019t mind Christmas dinner at the hotel \u2013 anything to avoid my mum\u2019s overcooked sprouts.\u2019 \u2018Your mother is famous for her overcooked sprouts, Shona Morrison.\u2019 \u2018Every year we all sneak them to the dog \u2013 and then we pay the price with his farts.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Sounds not unlike my Iain.\u2019 \u2018Morag \u2013 what are you like! Let me fetch your turkey \u2013 you watch the till. You watch old Donald there.
