All that\u2019s left for her to do, before Christmas can truly start, is collect the turkey from An Clachan and a sausage roll for her lunch just now. She holds the door for an elderly lady just leaving and they wish each other season\u2019s greetings. Inside, she can hear Shona singing along to the pa-ra-pa-pa-pam chorus of Peace on Earth\/Little Drummer Boy.<\/p>\n

The girl is up a rickety ladder sticking a fallen paper-chain back into position with a nub of Blu Tack. Morag notices that Shona\u2019s stockings have holes all over them. She knows Shona well so she assumes these are intentional but she does wonder how on earth she puts them on. \u2018Do they pay you danger money for climbing ladders, Shona Morrison?\u2019 \u2018Oh Morag don\u2019t make me laugh \u2013 the left side wobbles as it is.<\/p>\n

Hold it will you?\u2019 Back on terra firma, Shona beams. \u2018You all done then, Morag? You sure the Hotel won\u2019t fall down without you there holding it all together?\u2019 \u2018Well if it does I won\u2019t know because I intend to be in a food coma while keeping half an eye on Julie Andrews running around the hills singing on the TV.\u2019 \u2018You\u2019re funny!<\/p>\n

Your turkey\u2019s out the back \u2013 will you watch the till? I\u2019ll just fetch it for you. You\u2019re lucky I didn\u2019t sell it five minutes ago \u2013 bless her heart.\u2019 \u2018Bless whose heart?\u2019 \u2018Tourist. Older lady \u2013 she\u2019s here with her husband for Christmas.\u2019 \u2018I think we passed each other on my way in.<\/p>\n

Grey hair all over the place? Even older than me?\u2019 \u2018Aye \u2013 that\u2019s her. She\u2019s been in every day of her holidays, has a wee chat to herself as she shops. Came in just now asking for turkey.\u2019 \u2018On Christmas Eve?\u2019 \u2018Aye \u2013 seems they\u2019d forgotten the whole meal \u2013 she bought stuffing and gravy and two pots of trifle.<\/p>\n

I felt bad about the turkey; all I had was a packet of slices, or yours!\u2019 \u2018It\u2019s a wonder they didn\u2019t book at the hotel \u2013 we\u2019ve one table free now. Last minute cancellation.\u2019 \u2018I wouldn\u2019t mind Christmas dinner at the hotel \u2013 anything to avoid my mum\u2019s overcooked sprouts.\u2019 \u2018Your mother is famous for her overcooked sprouts, Shona Morrison.\u2019 \u2018Every year we all sneak them to the dog \u2013 and then we pay the price with his farts.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018Sounds not unlike my Iain.\u2019 \u2018Morag \u2013 what are you like! Let me fetch your turkey \u2013 you watch the till. You watch old Donald there. Donald \u2013 I\u2019ve told Morag to keep an eye on you!\u2019 \u2018Och \u2013 that is a fine bird, Shona!\u2019 \u2018Aye \u2013 so it is. You have a wonderful Christmas, Morag.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ll see you on the other side.\u2019 \u2018Where\u2019s the cranberry sauce?\u2019 \u2018Oh, we\u2019re out of it \u2013 I sold the last jar to the English lady who wanted turkey.\u2019 \u2018You sold my cranberry sauce \u2013 to an English woman?\u2019<\/p>\n
