He crosses his arms over his chest and moves to lean against the wall next to the back door. He may agree to keep his mouth shut, but he\u2019s not leaving.<\/p>\n

I decide to act like an adult and ask, \u201cHow can I help you?\u201d \u201cI\u2019m Detective Flanigan and this here is Detective O\u2019Hare.\u201d I nod and motion for them to proceed. \u201cWe need to ask you some questions about the morning you found Donald Griffin.\u201d \u201cAsk away.\u201d Detective Flanigan\u2019s eyes move through the room and stop briefly on Anna and Kristie.<\/p>\n

\u201cCan we do this somewhere private?\u201d \u201cNo.\u201d I shake my head. \u201cWe need to get the caf\u00e9 open and finish this morning\u2019s baking.\u201d A timer dings and I nearly smile. I couldn\u2019t have planned that better if I tried. The detective grunts before beginning his thousand questions. \u201cHow did you know the victim?\u201d \u201cHe was a student in my Introduction to World Literature class.\u201d \u201cWhat can you tell us about him?\u201d<\/p>\n

I cross my arms over my chest and lean on the table behind me. \u201cThere\u2019s nothing more to tell.\u201d No way am I telling them anything we\u2019ve learned since Don\u2019s death. \u201cHe was one student in a class of over one hundred students.\u201d \u201cWhat kind of student was he?\u201d I shrug. \u201cI\u2019d have to review my grade reports to answer you.\u201d<\/p>\n

I act like I didn\u2019t run to check the grades for the class as soon as Don\u2019s body was found. \u201cCan you do that?\u201d \u201cSure. I\u2019ll email you the information.\u201d He hands me his business card. The other detective leans forward to ask, \u201cYou can\u2019t tell us anything else about him? Did he ever skip class? Was he always on time?\u201d \u201cI don\u2019t keep attendance in the larger classes,\u201d I explain.<\/p>\n
