But love alone is not enough. Suppose your family was a rollicking carnival of love. But it was all haphazard. Helter-skelter. When the mood was on. Your parents never called a halt to anything; they never said no. You got as much of anything as your greedy little heart desired, as long as the supply lasted. But some of the kids always got more than others, not because they needed more, but only because they got there first. I think you would agree: a love that never says no is a love that soon becomes unfair.

And it usually ends up hurting somebody who gets the short end of it. Love without fairness is almost as bad as no love at all. So consider the rule of justice. The rule of justice simply requires us to see that everyone involved gets a fair deal. The classic way of saying it is that we all ought to get what we truly deserve.

To each his or her own: this is justice. No matter what association we are involved in— marriage, family, politics, corporation, or friendship—we ought to be fair. Moses told the ancient Hebrews as they got ready to inhabit the promised land: “Justice and only justice shall you follow. . .“ And the prophets echoed the rule across the landscape for hundreds of years. Amos’s passionate summons was typical: “Let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like a mighty stream.” Nothing is enough without justice.

But justice alone is not enough. Suppose your family specialized in fairness. And suppose the best thing you could say about your parents was that they always tried to be fair. They played no emotional favorites: all the kids were left equally far out in the cold. Perfect equality. You were all starved for affection at a table full of fairness. Never a good¬ night kiss, a long warm hug, a sigh that told you they really cared when you were hurt.

With a family like this, you know that people need more than justice. Love and justice need each other the way our skeletons need flesh and the way our flesh needs a skeleton. We will feel the symbiosis if we recall the following ancient tale. Jesus told a short story that has probably taught more people about real love than any story ever told.

It is about a member of a minority group, a Samaritan, a salesman maybe, on a busi¬ ness trip to the city of Jericho. On his way he saw a man who had been mugged and left to die, bleeding in the ditch. Two other men, both of them religious teachers, had seen him too, but they were behind schedule on their divine missions, and they passed the poor fellow by.

Harper & Row, Publishers, San Francisco Cambridge, Hagerstown, New York, Philadelphia, Washington London, Mexico City, Sao Paulo, Singapore, Sydney CHOICES.
