Step S. With holes A and B on top, individually turn cards 5, 6, 7, 8, and 13, 14, 15, 16 two quarter-turns toward the body. This puts holes C and D on top. Weave as in step 2 for 2″. This produces vertical stripes. Step 4. Keeping the cards in their new position, weave four turns toward the body and four turns away for 2″.<\/p>\n

This produces checks. Step 5. Turn cards 5 through 8, and 13 through 16 back to their original positions by turning two quarter-turns away from the body. Weave as in step 2 for 1″. Step 6. With holes A and B on top, turn the two center cards, card 10 and card 11, upside down by turning two quarter-turns toward the body.<\/p>\n

Weave one sequence as in step 2 (AB on top, AB toward the body, AB on top, AB away from the body). Take the two adjoining cards on each side of the two middle cards (8, 9, and 12, 13) and turn them upside down in the same manner as 10 and 11, and again weave the same sequence. Continue en\u00ac larging the \u201cv\u201d design by turning adjoining pairs and weaving until all but the border cards have been turned.<\/p>\n

Now reverse the process to form a diamond. Step 7. Turn the cards sixteen turns away from the body without weaving. Move the cards toward the body after each quarter-turn to pack the result\u00ac ing twists, but don\u2019t bring the weft thread across. Carry the weft thread up by wrapping it around the border spiral every fourth turn. Resume weaving and turn the cards sixteen turns away from the body. This will untwist the warp threads. Step 8.<\/p>\n

Card weaving (or tablet weaving, as it is also called) is a technique that has experienced a revival in recent years, and this is a book which is sure to intrigue both the experienced weaver and the beginner. The process of weaving with cards instead of a loom produces fabrics that are startling in their beauty and complexity.<\/p>\n

Because simple cards actually replace the loom, this type of weaving is simple to do and the equip\u00ac ment is completely portable. Best of all, the woven strips have a quality and intricacy of design that are totally unique to card weaving. The author begins the book with a detailed history of card weaving\u2014from its origins in ancient Egypt to the present day.<\/p>\n

The next chapter involves the materials needed and the types of yam most suitable for card weaving. Then the author takes the reader, step by step, through the process of card weaving. The reader is shown how to thread the cards and set them up to form a loom, how to turn the cards to produce the sheds, or spaces, for weaving, and given thorough instructions for weaving a sample belt. The next chapters deal with one of the most important aspects of card weaving\u2014 designing and drafting patterns.<\/p>\n

The range of patterns is almost unlimited, and there is a huge amount of free\u00ac dom and flexibility in how these patterns come about. A special section is devoted to weaving a double fabric and other special effects, such as free-form and dimen\u00ac sional weaving. In each chapter, the reader will see a wealth of fin\u00ac ished card weavings, both ancient and modem. A com\u00ac plete bibliography and glossary, plus an extensive suppliers list, round out the information.<\/p>\n
