Good morning, Cookie.” Estelle grinned at them. “It’s a beautiful day.” Cookie smiled as I went to the cash register to ring up Estelle’s ice cream order. “Good morning, Estelle,” she said. “How are you doing?” She set the tub of ice cream she was carrying into the freezer and turned to her. “I’m doing fine, Cookie,” Estelle said. “I’m so sorry about what happened last week.” Cookie nodded soberly.

“Thank you. I rang up Estelle’s ice cream, and after chatting a few more moments, she left. A moment later the bell over the door rang again as Charlene Douglas walked through it. I smiled. “Hi, Charlene.” Now was our chance to find out what she knew. She smiled wanly as she approached the counter. Charlene was around 5’6” tall and thin, with shoulder length blonde hair.

There were so many things that I wanted to ask her about her former boyfriend, Charlie Dade. “Hi Maddie.” She nodded at Chloe and Cookie. “Charlene, I’m so sorry about Charlie,” I said. “Charlene, I’m sorry too,” Chloe said. The smell of pancakes woke me, and I was smiling before opening my eyes. Was I still dreaming? And what was that? I sniffed the air. Bacon? If there were pancakes and bacon, there had to be a tall glass of orange juice, too. And maybe even some scrambled eggs.

My stomach growled at the thought. I blindly reached for my cat, Oliver, but his spot on the bed where he normally slept was empty. I opened my eyes to look for him, but he was nowhere to be seen. And then I remembered. The smell of bacon and pancakes wasn’t a dream. My parents were here visiting for the week.
