Once I reached him, he turned on his heel and strode down the corridor at a brisk pace. I glanced at Kaedren. He nodded once, silently telling me to follow. I did\u2014until I realized I wasn’t going to get very far on the carpeted floor in heels. With a sigh, I kicked them off and slung them over my shoulder. “Where are you taking me?” I asked. “On an official tour of the Starbreaker,” Torvyn replied. “You have been aboard for several days now, and all you have seen are the bridge, the astrolabe, and the gym.”<\/p>\n

His eye twitched at the last word. “It is time you see what this ship was truly built for.” “Why do I feel like I’m getting a one-way ticket to an airlock?” Torvyn tutted. He actually tutted. “That is ridiculous.” “Isn’t that, like, walking the plank? Or whatever pirates do to prisoners they don’t like?” “We are not pirates. And no\u2014opening an airlock in deep space would cost us precious atmosphere. We would dump you in the recycler.”<\/p>\n

“Wow. You really know how to make a girl feel special.” Torvyn turned, his expression hard\u2014then it softened, and he winked. “No harm will come to you, Doctor. In fact, I believe you will be pleasantly surprised by what you learn.” I exhaled and stepped toward him. “Okay. I’m listening.” “The Starbreaker is the flagship of the Zorathi Reach,” he said as we continued. “I doubt you have heard of our organization.<\/p>\n

We prefer to operate clandestinely.” “Why?” I asked. “Clearly, you have money and resources. Building and operating a ship like this must cost a small fortune.” He stopped at a bulkhead door. “The people we help\u2014and the things we do\u2014are frowned upon by the corporations that exert extreme influence over the galaxy.”<\/p>\n

“Like the one I worked for.” He nodded. “And that’s why you are suspicious of me.”<\/p>\n

Neither was the klaxon that had been screaming for an hour. Both were actively making it worse. The large silver wrench in my hand was waiting for its moment to shine\u2014to fulfill its one noble purpose. I smashed it into the light. The glass bulb shattered. Its remains fell to the ground like the crystalline raindrops this planet was famous for.<\/p>\n

I glanced at the wrench. I swear it was smiling at me. It might not have been how Dad taught me to fix things, but I don\u2019t think he would have complained. One problem solved, on to the next. I sat down at the computer terminal and logged in. My fingers typed to the beat of the AHHH-WOOO alarms, and I did a little chair dance, pretending I was in the Star\u2019s End again, the premier orbital dance club at Solaris Prime\u2014hundreds of light-years from this remote outpost.<\/p>\n

But that\u2019s what you get for having PhDs in Stellar Physics and Astrobiology. There\u2019s not much demand in the VIP section of the galaxy’s hottest clubs for a woman who waxes poetic about red dwarves and alien archeological digs. Although these alarms were making me almost miss standing at the bar listening to some attractive jerk drone on about how his finance degree was making him so much money. Almost. A notification blinked onto my screen\u2014a subspace transmission from Director Voss.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
