Maggie thankfully answers before I manage to put together a half-assed excuse. \u201cGod, can you chill out, Dad? How dare I say good morning, right?\u201d On second thought, maybe a shitty excuse would be better than flat out antagonization.<\/p>\n

I can\u2019t believe I let myself be so stupid. Did I really think putting myself in this situation was worth a good fuck? Even if I\u2014foolishly \u2014allowed myself to dream about something more for a moment there, I should never have let anything happen. This isn\u2019t about me. If this blows up in my face, it\u2019s going to rock the entire foundation of everything my Pa has worked on with David.<\/p>\n

To say he\u2019d be pissed is putting it lightly. David\u2019s fiery glare doesn\u2019t waver from my face, ignoring his daughter except for a scoff sent in her direction. His eyes are dark and his cheeks are red with barely restrained anger, his fists shaking at his sides as he stares me down. I do my best to make myself look smaller, but it\u2019s hard to tuck more than six feet of bulky muscle in with any real effect.<\/p>\n

\u201cI expect you to work while you\u2019re here, boy,\u201d he says, raking an unimpressed glare over me. \u201cNot flirt with my daughter.\u201d Maggie once again cuts in before I can assure David that nothing of the sort was happening. \u201cUh, hello?\u201d she asks, waving a hand in her dad\u2019s face and stepping closer to get his attention. \u201cCan you hear? I was saying good morning and checking on his arm.\u201d \u201cWhy are you worried about his arm?\u201d David asks sharply, his gaze finally snapping over to her.<\/p>\n

I let out a silent, controlled sigh of relief, although I expect it\u2019ll be short-lived. If I talked to my Pa like that, he\u2019d pop me in the mouth, but David seems used to it. \u201cYou do remember that I work at the doctor\u2019s office?\u201d she asks, just as scathing and sharp, meeting her dad toe to toe. \u201cAnd you remember Ben here slicing his arm open? Dr. Mulaney asked me to see if it was healing well or if she needed him to come back in.<\/p>\n

We\u2019re both just doing our jobs.\u201d She and David are locked in a staring contest, both trying to prove they can out-last the other. If they weren\u2019t standing in the doorway, I might try to sneak past them, but I\u2019m stuck until they finish their argument. David looks beside himself with fury, eyes flitting between me and Maggie like he can\u2019t decide who he wants to lay into first.<\/p>\n

His nostrils flare wide and the muscles in his jaw clench hard enough for me to see even beneath his scruffy beard.<\/p>\n

Dad blusters, his face ruddy and red like he thinks his anger will fix my attitude. Fuck\u2019s sake. He always deflects when I try to have a serious conversation with him. And he wonders why all I ever have for him is sass. I\u2019m not even being as bitchy as usual. If that\u2019s what he wants, though\u2026 \u201cPretty sure I\u2019m talking to my father,\u201d I say blandly, not looking up from my phone. \u201cWe could get a paternity test if you want to double check.\u201d He makes a choking noise from off to my side, and I glance up just in time to watch his mouth flop open and closed like a fish out of water.<\/p>\n

I snicker at the sight before turning my attention back to my social media feed. \u201cMagnolia Melody!\u201d Mom snaps as soon as the words are out of my mouth. \u201cI won\u2019t listen to you speak to your father like that.\u201d I know no one else dares speak to him like this, but someone needs to keep the man in line.<\/p>\n

Besides, I\u2019m only giving back as good as I get. If he wasn\u2019t so insistent on treating me like a child, I might just talk to him like an adult. Seriously, I don\u2019t get why he\u2019s making such a big deal out of this. It\u2019s not the first time I\u2019ve brought up my plans for after graduation, but he\u2019s acting like I shot him because I asked him for access to my trust fund.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s what it\u2019s there for, isn\u2019t it? I\u2019ve given him the same answer every single time he\u2019s asked me what I wanted to do after high school, and he blows up about it no matter how I phrase it. What, did he think my plans were going to change just because I finished high school? I\u2019m not playing around about this, not like I\u2019ve done with everything until now.<\/p>\n
