I do my best to make myself look smaller, but it\u2019s hard to tuck more than six feet of bulky muscle in with any real effect.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI expect you to work while you\u2019re here, boy,\u201d he says, raking an unimpressed glare over me. \u201cNot flirt with my daughter.\u201d Maggie once again cuts in before I can assure David that nothing of the sort was happening. \u201cUh, hello?\u201d she asks, waving a hand in her dad\u2019s face and stepping closer to get his attention. \u201cCan you hear? I was saying good morning and checking on his arm.\u201d \u201cWhy are you worried about his arm?\u201d David asks sharply, his gaze finally snapping over to her.<\/p>\n<p>I let out a silent, controlled sigh of relief, although I expect it\u2019ll be short-lived. If I talked to my Pa like that, he\u2019d pop me in the mouth, but David seems used to it. \u201cYou do remember that I work at the doctor\u2019s office?\u201d she asks, just as scathing and sharp, meeting her dad toe to toe. \u201cAnd you remember Ben here slicing his arm open? Dr. Mulaney asked me to see if it was healing well or if she needed him to come back in.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re both just doing our jobs.\u201d She and David are locked in a staring contest, both trying to prove they can out-last the other. If they weren\u2019t standing in the doorway, I might try to sneak past them, but I\u2019m stuck until they finish their argument. If he wasn\u2019t so insistent on treating me like a child, I might just talk to him like an adult. Seriously, I don\u2019t get why he\u2019s making such a big deal out of this. It\u2019s not the first time I\u2019ve brought up my plans for after graduation, but he\u2019s acting like I shot him because I asked him for access to my trust fund.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s what it\u2019s there for, isn\u2019t it?
