\u201cHey, is milk still making Caitlin sick?\u201d Dakota Ford, one of the Pinehurst deputies, asked as he drew another card, signaling the end of his turn. \u201cSierra made homemade yogurt and she wanted her opinion.\u201d \u201cYes,\u201d Owen, a part-time paramedic and deputy groaned. \u201cIt\u2019s awful. She gets so sad because she can\u2019t have any of her favorite things.<\/p>\n

Lela got her hooked on this coconut-based whipped cream stuff but Caitlin said it all got bought out and she\u2019s having trouble keeping it in stock. There\u2019s only one store in Red River that carries it and they said they are having the same issue.\u201d \u201cYeah? That sucks,\u201d Dakota said. The game ended later than Jared usually stayed up, but he didn\u2019t mind. They all cleaned up and said their goodbyes. When everyone was heading out, Jared stopped Owen with a word.<\/p>\n

Owen stepped back in and closed the apartment door. \u201cHang on a sec, I have something for you. But you can\u2019t say you got it from me, and don\u2019t ask any questions.\u201d \u201cOkay\u2026\u201d Owen said, eyebrows lifting. When Jared opened the fridge in the small kitchen, Owen blinked several times. \u201cI have to know,\u201d Owen said, his face incredulous as he stared at the contents of the fridge.<\/p>\n

\u201cI said don\u2019t ask questions.\u201d \u201cThat isn\u2019t possible. What the hell are you doing with\u2026how many cans of coconut whipped cream do you have in there, anyway?\u201d Owen asked, getting distracted as he looked a the sheer amount of whipped cream in Jared\u2019s fridge. \u201cThirty-two.\u201d \u201cThirty-two? What the hell. Are they for the shop?\u201d \u201cSomething like that,\u201d Jared said.<\/p>\n

\u201cOkay. I\u2019ll take a can. Thanks,\u201d Owen said, giving Jared a funny look. \u201cHere. Grab a bag,\u201d Jared said gruffly, indicating the grocery bag holder in one of the cabinets behind the counter. Jared loaded him up with half a dozen cans for his pregnant mate. \u201cJeez.<\/p>\n

What will I do with six of them?\u201d \u201cPregnant women love that shit. I bet she puts it on everything.\u201d \u201cSo, you gonna tell me why you have these? The real reason?\u201d Owen asked. \u201cNope.\u201d \u201cSuit yourself. Night, and thanks. Caitlin thanks you too.\u201d \u201cYup.\u201d When Owen closed the door behind him, Jared locked up and got ready for bed. You know, it\u2019s a lot of whipped cream, his wolf pointed out. I\u2019m running a coffee shop! Jared objected. It\u2019s a specialty product. Did you buy the stores out just so she can\u2019t have any?<\/p>\n

His wolf asked, without judgement. No. Of course not, Jared said, sighing. Well, okay, maybe I did. Don\u2019t judge me. I was not judging you, his wolf sniffed. I was going to say you need to steal the one from her office. I\u2019m not going to do that, Jared insisted. Mmhmm, and meanwhile she\u2019s not going back to see us because she\u2019s got her can of fancy special whipped cream over there in the chief\u2019s office.<\/p>\n

His usual opener, Zachary, was \u2018sick\u2019 – which meant that he\u2019d probably had indulged in too much sex and alcohol on the full moon. Jared had assured him he didn\u2019t need to work the morning after the full moon, but Zachary had insisted that he needed the money.<\/p>\n

He didn\u2019t need the money bad enough to show up to work, Jared\u2019s wolf pointed out with a huff. He\u2019s young, it happens, Jared thought back as he went through the motions of setting everything up in a hurry. His first customer was one of the local paramedics, coming in for his shift\u2019s usual coffee order. \u201cWho\u2019s on?\u201d Jared asked without greeting him. \u201cJust picking up for me, Ryder, and Brian,\u201d Blake said.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou got it,\u201d Jared replied, selecting their usual orders from a special menu he\u2019d setup for his regulars back when he first hired someone to help him in the coffee shop. When his regulars came in, Jared wanted a smoother experience so he had one of the local tech-savvy fae kids from the high school come build him an app that connected to a database. Regular customers got a two-sided rewards card, one to scan to add an order to their account so they got points, the other to scan to automatically populate their favorite drink order.<\/p>\n

People like Blake who frequently came in and ordered coffee for an entire shift got a separate card that would pull up the members of their shift, so the cashier on duty just had to click the right checkboxes for names and the orders were done. \u201cHey, add in something for the Chief, too,\u201d Blake said, glancing at his phone. \u201cYup,\u201d Jared said, tapping his screen to add the coffee to the order and send the whole thing to the county\u2019s tab.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
