Cupressus Macrocarpa is a tree. Plant it too far apart and it doesn\u2019t make a hedge. Plant it close and every fifth tree dies, and the rest go brown at the base and thin. The macrocarpa hedge, if ever it makes a hedge, is a prime horticultural mistake which hundreds of gardeners continue to make in spite of the appalling warnings which neighbouring gardens afford.<\/p>\n

Somehow they always suppose \u2014 how vainly! \u2014 that their hedge will be different. The hedge that skirted Potter Road was not different. It was a shaggy, half-brown abomination. \u201cUgliest of trees,\u201d Davie murmured, \u201cthe macrocarpa now Is hung with rust along the bough, All along the garden side, Wearing brown for Eastertide.\u201d At the gate he hesitated. It bore four very ancient and chipped injunctions \u2014 \u201cNo Hawkers\u201d, \u201cNo Circulars\u201d, \u201cShut the Gate\u201d and \u201cBeware of the Dog\u201d.<\/p>\n

Hawkers? Hawkers were a forgotten race. And as for the dog, Davie did not believe there was one, or if there were, he was probably an ancient spaniel with great floppy ears, amiably disposed to master and burglar alike. He opened the gate and walked in. Once there had been a garden here. There were beds full of rose bushes. But the bushes were unpruned and the grass was a foot high.<\/p>\n

There were daffodils blossoming unbidden in a corner. There was a thickly crammed border of irises. In its way it was beautiful, and mysterious as an early poem by Tennyson. At the end of a broken asphalt path stood the vicarage, nineteenth- century ecclesiastical in style and flaunting the horrible decoration of domestic stained glass, not only in the panels of the front door, but as a framework to the gothic windows. What was presumably the downstairs lavatory was so adorned that it looked like the window of a private oratory.<\/p>\n

Around the porch grew a huge wisteria. In a few weeks it would be what Mrs Tibbs called a picture. Davie looked at his watch. It was nine-thirty.<\/p>\n
