The Cambridge was designed to offer practical family transport and marked a significant change for Austin, for it was the first car in its class that the company assembled with monocoque construction, rather than a separate body-on- chassis layout.

Otherwise, it was a simple, no-nonsense family car, with ample seating for four people, decent ride quality thanks to its coil-sprung front suspension (the rear remained leaf-sprung) and a decent-sized boot. Over its production run, the Cambridge was badged variously as the A40, ENGINE: 1489cc, 4-cylinder POWER: 50bhp TOP SPEED: 77mph 0-60MPH: 21secs ECONOMY: 28–32mpg GEARBOX: 4-speed manual A50 and A55. The A40 used the 1189cc straight-four B-Series engine based on the one used in the previous Austin Somerset, albeit sharing no parts, with a modest maximum power output of 42bhp and a four- speed column-change gearbox.

Only 30,666 A40s were made before it was dropped in 1957. Also introduced in September 1954, and with a body identical to that of the A40 Cambridge, was the A50 Cambridge, which used the larger 1489cc B-Series with a single Zenith carburettor, good for 50bhp. It sold better and also remained in production through 1.5-litre B-Series engine as its predecessor, though with a higher compression ratio. It was rated at 51bhp and was slightly livelier.

The restyle also brought along a bigger boot and larger rear window, while smaller 13-inch wheels meant it sat lower than the A50 before it. Just over 154,000 were produced before it was replaced by the new Pininfarina-designed A55 Cambridge in 1959. The Cambridge also formed the basis for various commercial vehicles, including vans and pickups and, curiously, was built under licence by Nissan in Japan; the arrangement ending in 1959.

In total, 20,855 licensed Austin vehicles were produced by the to 1957, with 114,867 A50s being produced. The Deluxe version had a heater, leather seat facings, carpets replacing the standard rubber matting, armrests on the doors, twin-tone horns, a passenger sun visor, and some extra chrome, including overriders.

and keeping classics on the road, after submitting a funding request to open an onsite garage. The Grampian Transport Museum, located in Alford, Aberdeenshire, plans to use the facility to allow people to learn and practice vital dying skills, with an ultimate aim to expand in future and potentially create a skills academy. The venue currently features an extensive array of exhibits, spanning from 19th-century traveling chariots to its recently acquired former Top Gear vehicles, and there’s an oval track too.

In the TRIUMPH ROADSTER ROVER 800 SERIES PORSCHE 924 TURBO £3.35 BUYING THE FORD FIESTA The lowdown on the versatile Mk3 model collections centre there’s also a conservation workshop for light ‘clean’ work, and last year an ancillary space was converted into a ‘dirty’ workshop.
