Every spacer received training to become a leader, but only a few would have the privilege she now had with this team. That, she knew, should be her focus, but the doubts kept seeping in.

“Get a grip,” she chided herself in this void of her consciousness, knowing it was the false fear that would always seep in whenever good things happened. Remembering her Seeker’s song, she started humming, and memories of Virulia flooded her thoughts, taking on a life of their own. She recalled the circle of sisters who helped her and how good it had felt to be a part of them. Not even the Nighthawks could compare to the bond she had felt, having their collective voices inside her mind during the trance.

The memory calmed her, burying the images of worms and the cutter deep in her mind until she could barely recall them. She opened her eyes to the harsh brightness of her cabin, quickly shutting them again with a heavy exhale. “Planets,” she murmured, touching her chest to feel the rapid beating of her heart. “Absolutely no more rowcut tea before bed.” 1kitap1.com/en A chime over the intercom, and Lieutenant Cyulan Ore’s announced, “Captain Sho, Admiral Iiso Arang is on the line.” “I’ll take it here,” he said, and took a second to straighten his uniform.

He had been sitting for what felt like hours, obsessed with finding replacements for officers he’d promoted recently. Not that he didn’t have individuals who could do a fine job of sifting through all his candidates. This, above all else, he believed, was an area that demanded a captain’s scrutiny, and he prided himself on having done a stellar job of selecting his leaders.

His former XO, the late Commander Lester Cruz, had been the one misstep, and he blamed it on him inheriting the position as opposed to being drafted. A cursory glance at a tall terminal, functioning as a mirror with readouts running up and down its length, prompted him to straighten his posture and flash a self-assured grin before giving the lieutenant the go-ahead. The hologram flickered to life, revealing the image of an aging Seryac male. His eyebrows were so thick they concealed his eyes, and an abundance of thick, dark hair spilled over his shoulders and back like a mane.

Faintly glowing veins, brilliant as a hologram, ran beneath the thin, lilac-tinted flesh of his large hands. His uniform was practical for an admiral and hinted at a more active lifestyle than the masts, courts, and parties that an Alliance admiral was privy to. There was no established order between an Alliance captain and a local fleet admiral indirectly linked to the Alliance.

This is a work of fiction. A large officer forcefully made his way past them, and Se’Sync had to brace herself to avoid being pushed off the side of the ramp.

She quickly activated her magnetic boots, saving her from embarrassment, but the spacer beside her was less fortunate. It took immense self-control for the Muja to resist retaliating. He couldn’t have known who she was beneath the armor, and this was one of many insults she would have to get used to during her escape. She chanced a glance back at As’tu Su, similarly disguised, and from his expression, having a harder time showing restraint.

She didn’t know how long she could keep him placated. However, fighting on the ramp would expose her, and what would follow wasn’t a reality either of them wanted. The officer was a lieutenant, she assumed, from the dark green short cape flowing from his black powered armor, reflecting the hangar’s lights like polished obsidian.

She felt tempted to probe his mind to see the source of his gruff behavior, but now wasn’t the time for Muja Se’Sync, pathfinder of the collective. Now was the time for fugitive Se’Sync, harbinger of resolution. Her body felt waves of euphoric energy from the imagined outcome of her bringing defeat to the tyrants in charge of the planet. Their ruin would mean years of suffering for the Geralos. Her name would become a curse, but through her ambassadorship, Geral would eventually become a part of Anstractor’s Alliance.

The age that followed would benefit them all, and in that renaissance, they would celebrate her name as the one who ended the conflict.

This is a short excerpt from the opening of “” by Unknown, quoted for review and introduction purposes.
