He asked her which type of animal she would like to be if she could be changed into one. Brenda suggested a monkey. When Money asked her whether she would prefer to be a boy monkey or a girl monkey, he reports she replied ‘a girl’. This was taken by Money as evidence of Brenda’s gender preference (BBC, 2000). However, years later David argued that he had said ‘a gorilla’ in answer to the question.

Ignoring any deliberate misreporting by Money, this can be taken as evidence of a researcher hearing answers that they want to hear. The twins later reported that Money presented himself in very different ways during these sessions. When Ron and Janet were present, he presented an image of the ‘friendly uncle’ but when they were absent he could be quite threatening towards them. It is reported that he asked the 6-year-old twins to perform simulated sex with one another. On other occasions, he showed them sexually explicit pictures to try to reinforce their gender identities.

These details were later denied by Money although Money has written that such pictures can form a useful part of a child’s sex education (BBC, 2000). Ron and Janet were entirely unaware of all such instances. They had to offer bribes, such as trips to Disneyland, to get the twins to continue the visits. When Brenda was 7 years of age, Money started to talk about the possibility of having further vaginal surgery. Money argued that many of Brenda’s problems occurred because she was aware that she was different to other girls.

Brenda was, indeed, aware of this and could not apparently even bring herself to look between her legs. Money enlisted the help of Ron and Janet to keep up with their ‘homework assignments’. These involved talking to Brenda about her genitalia and the surgery. Brenda was particularly upset since she felt that her parents were now working with John Money and against her wishes. Nevertheless, Brenda remained adamant that she would not undertake any surgery.

Under extreme pressure from Money and constantly unhappy at school, Brenda eventually had a nervous breakdown. Family doubts At around this time, Ron and Janet were beginning to have doubts as to their original decision. They could see how unhappy Brenda was and that the reassignment did not appear to be working.

But they trusted John Money; they had put their faith in him and they could see very little option but to continue with the path set out for them. Their situation was intolerable. Brian was also having behavioural difficulties. He was jealous of all the attention Brenda got and was caught shoplifting at a local store. In desperation and in need of a new start, the Reimers sold their house and moved west to British Columbia.

Rather than starting afresh, the move was a disaster.

Classic Case Studies in Psychology This new edition of Classic Case Studies is the essential selection of case studies and stories that illustrate not only many of the most fundamental tenets of psychology, but also some of the most extreme forms of human behaviour. The human mind is both extraordinary and compelling. From the leader who convinced his followers to kill themselves to the man who lost his memory, these famous accounts have provided invaluable insights for scholars and researchers and amazed the public at large.

Brought to life by Rolls, each case is contextualised with more typical behaviour, while the latest thinking in each subfield is also discussed. Revised and updated, the new edition features two new case studies, including the ‘Jim twins’ by Thomas Bouchard, an amazing case of twins separated at birth and adopted by different parents, yet when reunited 30 years later shared so many behavioural characteristics.

Also featuring a new chapter on approaches, issues and debates, accessibly written and requiring no prior knowledge of psychology, this book is essential reading for A-level students and undergraduates alike. Geoff Rolls has taught psychology for over 26 years and is currently Head of Psychology at Peter Symonds College, Winchester.

He is the author of the popular Women Can’t Park, Men Can’t Pack (Chambers, 2009), which investigates gender stereotypes (including driving), and also Taking the Proverbial (Chambers, 2007), which explores the psychological truth behind well-known proverbs and sayings. 1kitap1.com/en Classic Case Studies in Psychology Fourth Edition Geoff Rolls 1kitap1.com/en Fourth edition published 2020 by Routledge 2 Park Square, Milton Park, Abingdon, Oxon OX14 4RN and by Routledge 52 Vanderbilt Avenue, New York, NY 10017 Routledge is an imprint of the Taylor & Francis Group, an informa business © 2020 Geoff Rolls The right of Geoff Rolls to be identified as author of this work has been asserted by him in accordance with sections 77 and 78 of the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988.

All rights reserved.
