Interestingly these racks sold for over £200 some fifty years ago. Rally Design then commissioned a UK gear cutter to manufacture batches of 2:4 ratio racks and pinions that allowed DIY conversion of the cam gears rack from standard to 2:4. Concurrently a Birmingham based company, produced a cheap quick rack at 2:5 ratio, it was OK but lacked many of the superior features of the OEM cam gears product and delivery was poor.

Rally Design then approached an Italian (ISO 9001 TS16949 certification) company OEM quality rack manufacturer to produce a faithful copy of the original cam gears unit. This rack was readily received by rally Escorts and the kit car industry. It also allowed incorporation of the superior tie rod/rack shaft ball joint solution, favoured by TRW and ZF. The solution transferred radial load into the rack body rather than into the rack shaft thus overcoming load and failures on rack shaft support bushes.

Escorts got quicker, tyres/wheels got wider so the need for a heavy duty quick rack became obligatory. The heavy duty version of the Rally Design rack became available – we incorporated the following features: • Rack shaft increased to 25mm diameter • Pre-load pad in sintered steel • Larger diameter track rod ball joint solution • Heavy duty pinion support bush • Heavy duty centre support housing • Increase of 20mm overall length, 133mm stroke length • Includes Polyrace mounts and heavy duty clamps • Rack available in 2:2, 2:4 ratio, RHD or LHD Motorsport 2025 PLEASE CHECK PRICES ON WEBSITE BEFORE PLACING ORDER DRIVER: Jim Hinton CO-DRIVER: Lewis Sim EVENT: ‘Rally Nuts’ rally 2021 IMAGE: Chicane Photography • Full colour Motorsport Catalogue NOW AVAILABLE!

• • MOBILE APP AVAILABLE!

This is a short excerpt from the opening of “” by Unknown, quoted for review and introduction purposes.
