Luckily, I had my water bottle with me. I hadn\u2019t thought to drink from it to cool myself down from the weird heat in the room, but now I twisted the top off as hard as I could and dumped it all out onto the pages to try and stop the flames.<\/p>\n

It didn\u2019t work. I swamped the book, which was already wet from me dripping all over it, but the flames got higher and brighter and smokier. The blast of dirty water from the ceiling shocked me more than the flaming book. The fire suppression system that probably had never been turned on since it was installed creaked and groaned and then shrieked to life, the valves that kept the water at bay twisting open and releasing a torrent of water that had sat in pipes for decades down into the little room with me.<\/p>\n

That did it, putting out the flames immediately. It also made the room smell all weird, and covered me in dirty mold water, and covered the book in it! \u201cOh no. Oh no, oh no, ohhhhhhh no no no.\u201d Not thinking about myself, I rushed back to the book and grabbed at it as if that would do anything.<\/p>\n

My hands squished into the pages, which were now more like paste or oatmeal. They disintegrated in my fingers, turning to mulch, and the more I tried to grab them and pull them toward myself, the more I destroyed them. There was no thinking in that moment, just panic. Something made me want to pull the book close to myself, as if that might dry it, but all I ended up accomplishing was making it worse.<\/p>\n

I was making it worse! I had to stop. I had to- I had to\u2026 With the fire gone, the sprinkler (more like fire hose) stopped and I was left alone and wet with the soaked book and my soaked clothes and a smell like an ancient book had been filled with filthy water, which it had, and someone was crying.<\/p>\n

Oh, I was crying. Exhausted, from the orgasm and the panic of the fire and the more-panic of the book being destroyed in front of my eyes, I fell face-first into the mushy pile of goo that was pretty much all that was left of the most exciting library-find in my entire life. Someone was sobbing. Oh, that was me, pouring tears and snot out onto the ruined remains of the book.<\/p>\n

Someone was chanting. Oh, that was me too. Upon finishing the words an eighth time, I left Sub-4D. Only\u2026 it wasn\u2019t me. Or something. This memory is still hazy, still weird. My body left Sub-4D, and my mind was there with it, but it wasn\u2019t totally me driving me around.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not on the endtable. Is it on the floor? Dee-doo. It\u2019s not on the floor. I rub my eyes, which sucks because my fingers are sticky, and now my eyelids are sticky and the phone is going to have to wait.<\/p>\n
