This was bilateral. Symmetrical. Her left arm\u2014the new one, the one that hadn\u2019t existed four days ago\u2014was draped across my chest, fingers curled loosely into my shirt. My left hand was on her hip. Her right leg had hooked over mine at some point during the night.<\/p>\n<p>My right arm was pinned under her head. My face must have shown something, because Lorelei looked at me and said, \u201cWhat\u2019s wrong?\u201d \u201cNothing.\u201d \u201cYou look like someone told you the inn stopped serving food.\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s not\u2014\u201d I rubbed the back of my neck. \u201cYour arm is healed.\u201d \u201cI\u2019m aware.\u201d The patience of a woman who\u2019d spent all day using it. \u201cSo you can undress yourself now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stared at me. The long stare that started at my face and ended somewhere behind my skull where my actual thoughts lived. \u201cThat\u2019s what you\u2019re upset about.\u201d \u201cI\u2019m not upset \u2014\u201d \u201cYou\u2019re upset that you\u2019ve lost your excuse to take off my clothes.\u201d She was collapsed on my chest. Breathing hard. The left hand had released my shoulder and was resting against the side of my neck, fingers curled against my jaw.<\/p>\n<p>The right arm hooked under my shoulder. We were a tangle again. Same as this morning, but infinitely different. I stared at the ceiling. I\u2019m glad I died. The thought was ridiculous and sincere and I meant every word. I\u2019m glad someone put three rounds in me in that parking lot. I\u2019m glad Mortis found me interesting. I\u2019m glad I pulled a sword from a cosmic slot machine and woke up in a field of alien grass.<\/p>\n<p>Because this\u2014this right here\u2014is better than anything my old life ever offered me. Lorelei lifted her head. Looked at me. Her hair was a mess. Her cheeks were flushed. She looked younger than forty-two. \u201cAre you crying?\u201d she asked. \u201cNo.\u201d I wiped my eyes. \u201cAllergies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She put her head back on my chest. The left hand found mine and laced our fingers together. We fell asleep like that. I woke before she did. Dawn light through the shutters. She was still on my chest, still bare, still warm. Her face in sleep was unguarded in a way her waking face never was\u2014the military mask gone, the careful neutrality gone, nothing left but a woman who\u2019d chosen to be here.<\/p>\n<p>I watched her breathe. She woke. Blinked. Looked at our arrangement.
