Did she have a brother? Did her mother have a son that Felíne didn’t know about? Or her father? He spent so much time away from the palace… “Railah?” Impossible. It was not possible. Felíne flipped through memories furiously, trying to identify some clue. Some fragment to help her make sense of what was going on. It was like trying to find a single sentence in a thousand paged tome.

There was no way. She would have known. She would have— “Railah.” Kal’s deep voice penetrated. Her gaze snapped to his, the name he spoke forcing her off her path of thought. She almost looked behind her, but she was captured by his attention. Railah? She said the name in her head. Slowly. Again. A piece snapped into place.

She felt bloodless. Lightheaded. “My…my mother sent for…my brother?” Kal must have mistaken her horrified shock for relieved surprise. “Yes,” he said slow, quiet, as though speaking to a frightened horse. “Your mother wrote to Rask. His friend’s sister was selected to become a Fate, and he’d staged a kidnapping to rescue her. But he got the wrong woman. The Prima of Asteros mistaken for a rescued Fate.

And if she was here, what happened to— “Railah?” Tears pricked her eyes. Railah. The real Fate. She looked into Kal’s face and saw a flicker of concern in his granite features. Oh gods, he truly didn’t know. He thought she was her. Kal thought she was his friend’s sister, Railah.

He thought he’d saved her from a terrible future as a Fated Mother. Her lip quivered. Kal regarded her a moment before he rose slowly to his feet. He didn’t take his eyes off her as he stood. “I am sorry I frightened you. I dreamt of a young woman in a dark dungeon bearing the impossible burden of fate. I did not know her name, her story, why she trembled in the shadows, nor even who thrust that responsibility upon her.

I only knew that she carried it with grim resignation, accepting the sacrifice it demanded, wanting more than anything to cloak herself in the illusion of freedom.
