This is supposed to be the easy one, the best, and the finale. Alexis would have been able to solve the simple puzzle by now if others weren’t constantly breathing down her neck. It wasn’t a difficult one. Honestly, if everyone just left her alone, she could have figured it out sooner.

Then past failures had to show up and ruin it. Couldn’t he move on with his life? He had a chance, now he had to let someone else have theirs, which, apparently, he didn’t agree with. “I never expected to see you again, Daniel,” I muttered, watching the exchange between Alexis and Dan through the window she had in her makeshift office. Alexis looked rightfully annoyed, and surprisingly, no one in the station had anything bad to say about her for it.

Per usual, Dan came in with a self-righteous attitude and an ‘I’m right, you’re wrong’ tone. He demanded to speak with Alexis, who had finally seemed to have a lead after getting harassed by anyone and everyone who wanted to have an opinion on her case. I picked her for a reason—sure, they didn’t know that, but they should respect it. I had made it very clear that I didn’t want her to have help because I didn’t want her to be bothered by others.

That had been the mistake I’d made with previous police stations. I let everyone in on the game. I believed that the more participants, the better the game, but instead the more people involved meant too many opinions. It split the force, caused in-fighting for those who thought they were right and others were wrong.

It meant that clues weren’t followed properly and more people died because of it. Eventually, the entire process became more exhausting rather than exciting. A lot like right now. Dan came in with his opinions on the clue I’d made for her. She didn’t need anyone else to solve the clue, in fact, she was already on the right track.

She knew to go back and look at the first victim. Hopefully the first several. Since the first victim was just a teaser to the real reason she was always going to be the one I lost to—the one who had to beat me. What she didn’t need was Dan coming in here to give his opinions. He’d failed, along with his partner and other officers. They couldn’t figure out the clues in time and people died.

It’s a real pity because the last girl didn’t need to die. Then again, if they had listened, then I wouldn’t have needed to do it in the first place. I shook my head, focusing on the assignments I had for the day.

A predator prefers to lie in wait. Anticipation, hunger, and the thrill moments before the attack rund high through their veins. Throughout the night, the eyes of the predator scan continuously looking for an easy prey. Which is exactly what I am looking for, a pleased smile curved onto my lips at the thought. I scanned through the crowd looking for the perfect person— someone to fit just what I wanted, what I needed.

I know someone is out here just waiting for me, the thought continually drifted through my mind, while I continued searching. No, they are too large, too tall, too petite, too crowded…Why didn’t any of them fit? Another drink appeared with a wave of my hand toward the bartender, another sweeping gaze through the crowd, and another disappointment.

This shouldn’t be this difficult, I thought with a grunt. I didn’t use to be this picky, did I? Have I always been like this? I groaned, sipping my drink and wishing for an easier time. But after years of doing this, the same game got boring. Where was the rush if there wasn’t a challenge? It still had to be the right challenge. A lone predator wouldn’t attack a large meal without help, but help wasn’t an option anymore. Taking on a battle that couldn’t be won wasn’t smart, and after this long, I knew how to avoid detection unless I wanted the attention.

Maybe that’s the problem. Another long sip of alcohol hit my tongue, another gaze to the far corners of the bar, and another wave of disappointment. Maybe this has gotten boring again. What the hell am I supposed to do if that’s the case? I couldn’t just stop, not with the lackluster endings of the previous games. The sharp click of my tongue could barely be heard over the music to anyone else, but to me it echoed the annoyance sitting in my gut.

Maybe I needed to change the game again. Maybe I needed a new playmate. Competition. Something new. Someone different. That’s what makes hunting more enjoyable. Maybe I need a challenger, someone to go against and compete with again. Someone who will give me the ending I rightly deserve. The thought lingered, bouncing around, taunting, and oh so very tempting.

This is a short excerpt from the opening of “” by Unknown, quoted for review and introduction purposes.
