The same sort of overall lettered motif honored some of our presidents, such as an “H” quilt from Ohio.

Made around 1930, it celebrated the presidency of Herbert Hoover in forty-eight “H” blocks, white lettering on blue, with a red background.5 The elephant and donkey, symbols of our two major political parties, appeared in patterns for quilt blocks, especially a year or two in advance of a presidential election—such as “A Very Democratic Donkey,” published by the Kansas City Star shortly before the 1932 election.6 Each party produced its own campaign textiles that were worked into quilts and other objects as patriotic symbols.

National Recovery Act yoyo quilt in NRA office, Washington, DC Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Division Franklin Delano Roosevelt served as president from 1933 until 1945, before term limits were ratified in 1951, steering the US through the Great Depression. To that end, he established the National Recovery Agency as part of his New Deal for America to help industry recover from the economic fiasco.

Although the Supreme Court declared this aspect of the New Deal to be unconstitutional and shut it down in 1936, several of the goals were accomplished, with Roosevelt viewed as a hero by many workers. Textile companies printing feed-sack bags honored him in their motifs. We have several “NRA” quilts from that time featuring the blue eagle insignia of the agency, and at least one of them was gifted to the president.7 The blue eagle became a symbol of patriotism nationwide for businesses supporting the recovery effort as shop owners posted the image on their packages and in their windows.

They commercialized patriotic imagery like many businesses would do in 1976.

Other Schiffer Craft Books on Related Subjects: Quilts of Valor: A 50-State Salute, Quilts of Valor Foundation, Contributing authors Ann Parsons Holte, Renelda Peldunas-Harter, Ann Rehbein, Sue Reich, Foreword by Marianne Fons, ISBN 978-0-7643-5630-8 Art Quilts Unfolding: 50 Years of Innovation, Sandra Sider, editor, Nancy Bavor, Lisa Ellis, Martha Sielman, SAQA (Studio Art Quilt Associates, Inc.), ISBN 978-0-7643-5626-1 Quilts Presidential and Patriotic, Sue Reich, ISBN 978-0-7643-5041-2 Copyright © 2026 by Sandra Sider Sections of chapter 7 previously appeared in the author’s self-published book Pioneering Quilt Artists, 1960−1980: A New Direction in American Art, 2010.

Library of Congress Control Number: 2025939956 All rights reserved.
