He turned toward us, a friendly smile creasing his weathered face. “Well, good morning, ladies. Don’t tell me you’re out running for fun. That’s cruel to the rest of us who prefer to stay warm and stationary.”

He chuckled, his breath puffing into the chilly air. Lucy shot him a playful grin. “Oh, you don’t know what you’re missing. Running is a blast.” Larry’s brow furrowed in exaggerated skepticism. “I think you’re making that up, Lucy,” he said, shaking his head with a laugh. I smiled, adjusting my ponytail as we came to a stop in front of him. “It takes a little getting used to, but once you get past the whole struggling-to- breathe part, it’s not so bad.

You might even like it.” “Not likely,” Larry said with a smirk. “I’ll stick to walking, thanks.” “Fair enough,” I said. “How have you been?” His expression dimmed slightly as he flexed his fingers. “Oh, you know, getting by. I have a little arthritis in my hands these days, but I figure warmer weather will help.

Can’t come soon enough.” I nodded, knowing how frustrating it must be for someone like Larry, who had always been active and hands-on. “I hope so. That kind of thing can really slow you down.” “Yeah, but what can you do?” He shrugged. “Say, how’s your husband doing with the investigation into Kurt Valentine’s murder?” I let out a slow breath. “He’s working hard on it, that’s for sure. I know he won’t stop until he figures out who killed Kurt.” Larry’s jaw tensed as he nodded.

“Good. It’s hard to rest knowing a killer is walking free around this town. Sure was a shame about Kurt. My long hair framed my face in a tempest of red curls, tumbling over my shoulders in an untamed mass. I sighed and gave them a quick fluff. If I added any more product, its weight would drag my curls straight, and I wasn’t about to risk that.

Shrugging, I let my hair do what it wanted. It always did anyway. I pulled the door open. “Hey, Lucy!” My best friend stood on my doorstep, her cheeks pink from the brisk morning air. She wore a sparkly black top beneath her brown suede coat, the shimmer catching the light where she hadn’t bothered to button the top button.

I recognized the top—it was one of her favorites, and she usually saved it for special occasions. She grinned, her eyes bright with excitement. “Hey, Allie! I hope I’m not too early, but I just couldn’t wait any longer. I’m so excited about today.” I laughed and stepped aside to let her pass. “Me too. Where’s Ed?” I glanced out the door at her car parked in my driveway.

She shook her head as she slipped off her coat and draped it over the back of a chair in the entryway. “You know how he is. There were some old Westerns on TV, and once he got settled in, I knew there was no way I was dragging him out of the house.

He said something about John Wayne being more entertaining than a Hollywood actress in real life.” I chuckled as we made our way to the kitchen. “Figures. Coffee?” “Yes, please! I haven’t had any yet. I thought about making a cup before I left, but I was too impatient to get here.” I grabbed two coffee cups from the cupboard and set them on the counter.

This is a short excerpt from the opening of “” by Unknown, quoted for review and introduction purposes.
