What I allowed myself to hear went more along these lines: \u201cDear Lord, it\u2019s such a burden for this Christian leader to worry so much about his son. If I could be effective with this young man then perhaps his dad\u2019s ministry could make even more of a difference for your kingdom. Please help me do a good job.\u201d , Even though I wrapped my fleshly urges in spiritual dress, I sensed that my prayer was not getting through. I wasn\u2019t convinced God was commit- | ted to my noble agenda.<\/p>\n

So I took inventory of my resources: * I did well in graduate school. * Several therapy supervisors predicted great things for me. * Local word was already spreading that I was a pretty decent therapist. Yes! I can do it. I think. I hope so. God, please! Help a little. Paul spoke of struggling for others in the energy of Christ (Col. 1:19, 2:1). He longed to see others become more like Christ (Gal. 4:19). The apostle John jumped up and down with delight when the people he loved remained faithful to God (3 John 4).<\/p>\n

Their agenda was to build God\u2019s kingdom. Mine was to build my city. I struggled for myself more than for my client, wringing my hands over whether good things would happen. Was I adequate to make them happen? That question burdened me more than whether the work of God\u2019s Spirit was being furthered in this young man\u2019s life.<\/p>\n

; The urge to help, though disguised as a good one, should have been killed. But I honored it. The man was helped. His dad was impressed; my reputation grew. The foundations of my city were firmly laid. Praise God! Or me! Whomever. I don\u2019t really care. My life was working. What else matters? City builders don\u2019t connect. They require others to affirm their ade- quacy. And when someone does affirm them, a bond develops.<\/p>\n
