There was no time to argue with a butthurt eldritch being— she needed to escape. It hurt her to abandon the loot; there was something curious about the beads. But she stashed both items under the woolen blankets rather than risk alerting the campers to her presence. Though she couldn’t stop herself from taking a marblelike bead and sticking it in her pocket.

A chain still wrapped her legs, so she used the Might in her arms to pull herself along. Her body jerked, but Vitality suppressed the pain. Her fingers found holds in the pitted, worn tiles, and she crawled out of the room. The open courtyard presented a choice: risk the desert or venture deeper into the ruins?

Beyond the ancient flagstones, the desert glowed with soft light, while the ruins were a tangled mess of shadowy passages. With the sand being the only light source, if she went any deeper, the darkness would blind her. But the desert held predators—packs of them. She couldn’t see them now, but they were out there. Waiting for her. A voice echoed. She flinched at the alien tongue that sounded as though it came from right beside her. It only took a few seconds, but Zoe decided. The ruins protected her from the three-eyed monsters that chased her; she had to trust they would protect her from the campers as well.

She hauled herself away from the courtyard and followed the route the river carved through the ruins, down a passageway, through rooms emptied by time. Stone shelves, benches, recesses, but all sat empty and crumbling. She left the voices behind, and besides the soft sound of her body dragging over sand, the air was still and quiet. Her curiosity surveyed the ancient dark as she ventured deeper. Was this a temple? Housing? A workshop? She wasn’t an archeologist, and the shadows made any attempts at identification impossible. Only the sand that had blown in through the cracks in the walls offered any illumination at all.

After unknown hours, the river vanished beneath unending tiles. Ding! -1 chain for ignoring me. Dammit! The chain around her hip vanished, and her legs fell loose once more. The sudden pain almost made her scream. She bit her lip to muffle the sound, but the wounds of gluttony only made the pain worse. Though the Crimson Armada System was cruel, this Black Star was petty.

Cover design by Megan Glenna Copyright © 2026 by Sacha Rudd All rights reserved.
