But did I really want to sacrifice my clever, bold event horse, and watch him ridden to glory by someone else? Of course I didn\u2019t. The thought was heartbreaking. I loved Legend more than anything else, probably more than anyone else. He had been my saviour, my hero, and he had been mine. But not for long now.<\/p>\n

After this morning he would belong to someone else. I told myself the training centre was the future. Now Hans was involved the project seemed to have taken on a life of its own. It had started out as the Fanes\u2019 plan. Then it had been my plan. Now it was his plan. It was unstoppable. And it was massive.<\/p>\n

Was it really what I wanted? Yet what would I do \u2013 what would the Fanes do \u2013 without the horses? Horses were all we knew. Passing Harry Sabin\u2019s field, I remembered when the Fanes had first spotted Legend amongst a herd of scruffy equines. He had stood out like the star he was, incongruous in such company.<\/p>\n

Now the huge, neglected field was empty. Nor was there anyone in the ramshackle yard, as far as I could see. But it was still early; Harry Sabin was probably still in his cottage, fast asleep in a bed heaped with horse blankets. More memories surfaced as we passed the entrance to the drive of Winter Hill, where Felix Hissey lived. Desperate to buy Legend from Harry Sabin I had managed to persuade him to sponsor me as an event rider and buy Legend for my event horse. But Legend had bucked Felix off when he had gone to try him and when I had arrived to collect the money, he had been in plaster from ankle to hip.<\/p>\n

Even after all this time I remembered the way my heart had plummeted.<\/p>\n

Yet here we are at last, back with Elaine and the Fane sisters where we left them in the eighties, still struggling to make the stables pay and finance Elaine\u2019s eventing career, with Elaine\u2019s father, Harold, now married to Lady Jennifer and all living at Havers Hall as just one big happy family \u2013 well, almost.<\/p>\n

When I started writing what became generally known as Fane Book 4, someone said \u2018You realise there will be a riot if anything happens to Nelson?\u2019 Well, nothing happens to Nelson. They are all here, the horses you loved all those years ago: Legend; the bad-tempered-chestnut; the mare- who-sometimes-slipped-a-stifle; the black-horse-who-never-stood-still and, of course, Nelson. I really enjoyed writing this book. I hope you enjoy it.<\/p>\n

Caroline Akrill OceanofPDF.com Chapter 1: How the black horse got his name I was just loading the skip onto the barrow when, with a tremendous clatter of hooves, the bad-tempered-chestnut raced into the yard with Doreen hauling at his reins and screeching like a lunatic; only just managing to avoid decapitation by flattening herself along his neck as the horse made a dive for the safety of his stable.<\/p>\n

Even amidst the drama of this unexpectedly early and somewhat abrupt return from morning exercise, I could not fail to notice that Doreen had set out with two horses and returned with only one. I dropped the skip and ran to the stable door. \u2018Where is the black horse?\u2019<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
