Definitely warm.\u201d His hand comes up to tuck a strand of hair behind my ear. \u201cAnd this\u2014\u201d He lets the strand slide through his fingers. \u201cDark brown, but it catches red in the sunlight. Warm.\u201d His eyes drop to my cheeks, and that slow, devastating smile spreads across his face. \u201cAnd then there\u2019s this.\u201d He traces his fingertip feather-light along my cheekbone. \u201cThe way you get flushed. All that red underneath your skin. Pure warmth.\u201d \u201cThat\u2019s just makeup,\u201d I bluff, knowing I\u2019m blushing harder.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know, the stuff that comes in a compact?\u201d \u201cIs it?\u201d The intensity in his blue-green gaze makes my skin burn hotter. \u201cBecause I\u2019m watching it deepen. Spread down your neck.\u201d His finger trails from my cheekbone down to the pulse point at my throat, where my heartbeat is absolutely betraying me. \u201cMakeup doesn\u2019t do that, darlin.\u2019\u201d I open my mouth, but no words come out.<\/p>\n

His hand slides to the back of my neck, fingers tangling gently in my hair. His gaze drops to my lips. \u201cWe\u2019re in the middle of Patterson\u2019s Hardware,\u201d I whisper, but I\u2019m arching into his touch instinctively. \u201cWell aware.\u201d His thumb strokes along my jaw as he tilts my face up toward his. My eyes flutter closed.<\/p>\n

I can feel the heat of him, the magnetic pull drawing us together. His breath mingles with mine. He\u2019s right there. Right there. \u201cExcuse me, do you folks know where I can find the wood stain?\u201d We spring apart like we\u2019ve been electrocuted. An elderly man with a cheerful smile stands at the end of the aisle, completely oblivious to what he just interrupted.<\/p>\n

Luke blows out a breath, running a hand through his hair. \u201cUh, yeah. Two aisles over, left side, sir.\u201d \u201cMuch appreciated!\u201d The man ambles off. I\u2019m gripping the shopping cart handle so hard my knuckles are white, my heart still pounding like I\u2019ve run a marathon. When I finally dare to look at Luke, he\u2019s staring at me with an expression that\u2019s equal parts frustration and heat.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe should\u2014\u201d I swallow. \u201cWe should get to Mad Dog\u2019s. Shift starts in twenty minutes.\u201d I try to feel grateful that the moment between us was shattered. Friends can go shopping at a hardware store together. Friends do not kiss in the middle of said hardware store. And Luke is the first good friend I\u2019ve had in a long time. I don\u2019t want to mess it up.<\/p>\n
