\u201cOh my God. I\u2019m gonna kill you.\u201d \u201cOkay, okay. I\u2019m finished. I swear.\u201d But her lips are twitching as she goes back to her waffle. \u201cYou think I should\u2019ve gone with him?\u201d \u201cNo. I absolutely don\u2019t.\u201d She glances up at me. \u201cOne hundred percent no. You did the right thing for you. Not everybody would\u2019ve stuck to their guns in that situation, but you did. And I expect nothing less from you by now.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, thanks for that.\u201d \u201cYou still sound bummed,\u201d she points out before popping a piece of waffle into her waiting mouth. \u201cI am! Because that\u2019s it. He\u2019ll never call; he\u2019ll never text. I\u2019m sure he deleted my number the second I was out of the cab.\u201d \u201cDo you honestly think he was lying to you about being a nice person? About liking you?\u201d \u201cYou don\u2019t think so?\u201d \u201cI love you, so of course I don\u2019t think he was lying. I think you charmed him, the way you charm just about everybody.\u201d<\/p>\n

That makes me laugh. \u201cPlease. You\u2019re just saying that.\u201d \u201cIf that\u2019s what you wanna think.\u201d She shrugs, throwing her hair over one shoulder. \u201cBut it\u2019s true. I think he found you refreshing.\u201d \u201cYou weren\u2019t even there.\u201d \u201cYou didn\u2019t hang all over him, did you?\u201d \u201cNo.\u201d \u201cYou didn\u2019t try to use him somehow, like scoring an expensive night out?\u201d \u201cOf course not.\u201d \u201cI\u2019m sure he\u2019s not used to that, and he probably really liked it. You treated him like a real person.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI did keep telling him how special it was to be with him though.\u201d \u201cProbably just enough to make him feel like a big deal. From what you\u2019re telling me, you did everything just right. He felt flattered and important but not so important that you became just another girl. Just one of many who are always trying to lock him down.<\/p>\n

You stood out.\u201d She\u2019s wearing her killer smile by the time she\u2019s finished, the one I\u2019m sure will win over every jury she\u2019ll ever be in front of. Though it\u2019s not convincing me right now. \u201cYou weren\u2019t there. Or so I tell myself. I\u2019m feeling dramatic. As in actual, physical shopping. In a store. With doors and mirrors and people and cash registers. All of it. For somebody whose entire life generally consists of online shopping, this is a pretty big deal. I even packed snacks in my purse, the way people do for toddlers when they know the kid will get hungry and cranky halfway through a trip. Hayley waves a hand in my general direction. \u201cI mean, it\u2019s cute, but don\u2019t you think it\u2019s a little young for you?<\/p>\n

You\u2019re twenty-five years old, Kitty, and you\u2019re gorgeous and successful. Why are you dressing up like some sort of cartoon character?\u201d I turn around to look at myself in the mirror beyond the curtained partition. \u201cI don\u2019t look like a cartoon character.\u201d \u201cYou\u2019re dressed like a superhero.
