I remember that the instructions were to use the skills we had learned in class to con- struct a geometric design inside a circle on a 12-inch x 12-inch piece of plywood.<\/p>\n<p>Then, our teacher explained, we would hammer small nails into the wood, delineating our design. Finally, we would tightly wrap colored thread from nail to nail to complete our work. Needless to say, our parents helped, but the pleasure of creating and sharing the projects enlivened our class for weeks. The mandala reflects a person\u2019s felt experience of being a Self: a locus of awareness, a generator of willed activity, a creature with memo- ries of its own unique history. In short, a mandala mirrors personal iden- tity, persistent yet always in flux. Individuals find pleasure in creating and coloring their own mandalas for creative self-expression, psycho- logical insight, and an experience of balance, harmony, and well-being.<\/p>\n<p>The circle that is the basis of mandalas has rich artistic and cultural resonance.
