Mason turned to the others. \u201cHave you guys heard where the quarantine line is?\u201d \u201cThe quarantine line?\u201d Josh repeated through his duct-taped mask. \u201cThe edge of the zone,\u201d Mason said, \u201cwhere survivors go to be processed.\u201d \u201cYou mean like they did in Florida?\u201d Dave said. \u201cThey never announced anything about it. They never said where the boundaries were or how we could get out or anything.<\/p>\n

We just had the blue screen telling us to stay put.\u201d Mason turned back to face the road. Khava heard him quietly swearing inside his respirator, the bubble of his good humor burst. \u201cWhat does it mean?\u201d Khava wanted to know. \u201cThe zone is too big?\u201d Mason shook his head. \u201cI think it means we\u2019re on our own.\u201d Mason turned back to the others again. \u201cEverybody keep your eyes open for some kind of weapon. Even a piece of steel or a heavy stick or something, okay?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOh my god, are we going to have to fight?\u201d Nicole whimpered. \u201cI can\u2019t fight!\u201d Even Mason didn\u2019t answer her now. \u201cHere\u2019s what we\u2019re going to do,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019re going to sneak up there and search those cars for weapons. Everybody keep low and quiet.<\/p>\n

We draw attention before we get a chance to arm ourselves, we\u2019ll be SOL.\u201d \u201cWhat\u2019s SOL?\u201d Nicole said. \u201cShit out of luck,\u201d Josh said, his glazed eyes shining in the artificial light. \u201cDo you think they\u2019ll send in the Reapers? My brother knew a guy that was one of them.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey said they\u2019d never do it again,\u201d Mason said, not exactly answering the question. Khava touched Mason\u2019s shoulder and pointed across the road, where evergreens had been planted to conceal the scaffolding of an enormous set of bleachers. \u201cWe should cross over first, stay close to the trees.\u201d Mason nodded and got to his feet. \u201cLet\u2019s go all at once and get it over with.\u201d \u201cWait, what are we doing?\u201d<\/p>\n

Nicole asked. \u201cWe\u2019re all going together,\u201d Mason said. \u201cAt the same time.\u201d \u201cWhat\u2019s our rally point?\u201d Dave asked. \u201cJust in case we get separated.\u201d Mason looked at him. \u201cThere is no rally point, bro. We\u2019re in the zone. No place is secure. Just try to stay close.\u201d Khava and Mason jogged out under the yellow glare of the streetlights, heading, by mutual instinct, for the corner of a single-story maintenance building behind a row of shrubs.<\/p>\n

They crossed a sidewalk and a short strip of grass before they bunched together under the eaves, Mason looking around the corner and Khava thinking, for a moment, that she might have heard coughing\u2014hard to tell how far\u2014maybe from the soccer field on the other side of the bleachers.<\/p>\n

When it is done, the dead host is left contorted as though in seizure around some high branch, a long green tendril sprouted from its head, and above it, a billion spores released to the wind, a nightmare in miniature. But the host is only an ant, only a lowly insect.<\/p>\n
