Critically evaluate the dynamic tensions between compassion and authoritarianism through a Confucian yin–yang lens and their implications for managerial coaching. Apply the yin–yang structured compassion coaching framework to enhance employee outcomes such as wellbeing, performance, and career development. Introduction Managerial coaching, defined as “a supervisor/manager serving as a facilitator of learning by enacting behaviors that enable employees to learn and develop work-related skills and abilities” (Ellinger et al., 2011, p. 68), has been embraced by many organisations globally.

According to the British Council, when managers have effective coaching skills, employees are 40% more engaged and 20% less likely to turnover (Corporate English Solutions, 2023). Effective managerial coaching also affects sales representative employees’ performance (Proença, 2023). Managerial coaching enhances employee performance, engagement and retention, learning, resilience, and wellbeing (Hui et al., 2021; Li et al., 2022; Nyfoudi et al., 2023; Ribeiro et al., 2021). Scholars have advanced managerial coaching research from different aspects such as its dimensions, indicators, and styles of managerial coaching (Hosseini et al., 2023; Hui et al., 2013; Smith et al., 2021).

For instance, Smith and coauthors (2021) identify five dimensions of managerial coaching skills (open communication, team support, feedback, goal-setting, and empowerment) and empirically test that managerial coaching significantly impacts employees’ personal learning and organisational commitment. Hosseini et al. (2023) find that managerial coaching indicators such as knowledge, ethics, and leadership enhance productivity and talent development. Hui et al. (2013) find that leaders with guidance and facilitation coaching styles provide different levels of direction and empowering to followers. Despite the importance of managerial coaching and scholarly efforts in Southeast Asia to investigate its impacts on employee performance, commitment, creativity, and employee wellbeing, only limited attention has been paid to understand the impacts of managerial coaching from an indigenous cultural perspective.

A few studies were conducted either with an indigenous sample (Hui et al., 2021 with a sample from Hong Kong), or testing the moderation of indigenous value orientation of the subordinates (Chinese traditionality; see Zhao & Liu, 2020). Yet, no research has examined how indigenous leadership behaviours cultivated by the Confucian culture impact managerial coaching and the outcomes.

Countering with Compassion provides educators with the tools needed to weave compassionate practice into their classrooms, schools, and wider communities. Bringing together diverse contributions, the book explores how the development of compassion across policy and practice offers a transformative pathway for both children and school staff. A range of pertinent topics are covered, from developing a compassionate mind and compassion in children, to compassion fatigue for educators and compassionate leadership.

Each chapter includes a range of exercises and activities, allowing the reader to reflect and to apply the content to their own life and work. The book puts theory into practice and encourages the reader to become a change maker in their school. It will be valuable reading for both primary and secondary teachers and school leaders. Alexandra Sewell is a Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registered educational psychologist and senior lecturer in special educational needs, disability, and inclusion at the University of Worcester.

Her research has been published in numerous international journals and explores the concepts of voice and inclusion in education.
