I\u2019m swapping carry-on bags with her so she can take them. Once Caroline leaves the room, Jules just looks at me, her lips set into a no-nonsense line.<\/p>\n

I want to climb over the table, take her in my arms, and bury my face in her soft, sweet-smelling hair. Kiss her until she\u2019s breathless. But the playful look I like to think is just for me is gone. Something\u2019s different. \u201cIs everything okay?\u201d I ask her. She lowers her brows. \u201cWhy wouldn\u2019t it be?\u201d Obstinance. Great. Like I\u2019m not already in a shitty enough mood. \u201cHow\u2019s your nephew feeling?\u201d \u201cHe\u2019s better.\u201d There\u2019s a sharpness to her tone I\u2019ve never heard before. I shouldn\u2019t be in here alone with her, but with everything else going on, I selfishly want to return to our conversation from the other night.<\/p>\n

She\u2019s the only thing that feels good right now. \u201cI have another call,\u201d she says, walking over to the door. \u201cI\u2019ll keep you updated on the PR stuff by text today.\u201d I want to tell her to be in the locker room tonight, just so I can look at her. But I have no good reason for it, so I stay silent. She leaves, and even though I know something\u2019s wrong, I can\u2019t go after her.<\/p>\n

I scan the locker room, my brows dropping when I see our starting goaltender, Isaac Moss, holding up his phone like he\u2019s taking a selfie. He\u2019s actually taking a video. Our team captain, Carter Stanton, is standing next to him and they\u2019re both grinning. Isaac seems to be interviewing Carter.<\/p>\n

\u201cFeeling good, Cap?\u201d \u201cFeeling outstanding. We put in the work in the offseason, and now it\u2019s time to get back out there.\u201d \u201cYou got any picks for MVP tonight? And don\u2019t say me. You\u2019re always heaping me with praise, it\u2019s just a lot, you know? Give someone else a chance.\u201d I exhale through my nose, Moss\u2019s energy grating on my nerves. He\u2019s still got two years left in his contract and he\u2019s one of the top tenders in the league, so he knows his roster spot is safe.<\/p>\n
