She pressed her lips together, debating whether to say anything. Not to would be a sin of omission, and they\u2019d call her on it if any of them found out. \u201cWell, as a matter of fact\u2014\u201d Katie stopped pushing coleslaw around on her plate and came back to life.<\/p>\n

\u201cAha!\u201d Abby held up a hand before Katie could get off and running. \u201cWe both like seafood,\u201d she explained calmly, though admittedly her inward reaction was not quite so calm\u2014but again, that was too silly to talk about. They were all grown women, for heaven\u2019s sake. \u201cHe mentioned knowing a restaurant I might like, then suggested taking me there. No big deal.\u201d Obviously, that wasn\u2019t the way her friends saw it.<\/p>\n

Katie grinned. \u201cTalking, eating\u2014I call that real progress.\u201d She leaned her chin on her upturned hand and gazed up at Abby, fluttering her lashes. \u201cSo, what\u2019ll your firstborn be called?\u201d Abby popped a French fry into her mouth. \u201cHow about Snoopy, after my best friends?\u201d Hope laughed. \u201cWorks for me.\u201d Abby rolled her eyes. There was no stopping them once they got going. \u201cYou are hopeless, all of you.\u201d \u201cOh no, ever hopeful, Abby,\u201d Hope told her with mock solemnity. \u201cEver hopeful.\u201d A sudden beeping noise brought an abrupt halt to the conversation and had all of them looking down at their pagers.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s mine,\u201d Abby announced, seeing a familiar number register on the small LCD screen. \u201cMaybe that\u2019s Kyle,\u201d Dana suggested, struggling to keep a straight face, \u201ccalling to find out what you\u2019ll be wearing.\u201d Katie grinned. \u201cTell him plastic wrap, and there\u2019s a prize in it for him if he can peel it off you in under five minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shaking her head, Abby rose. \u201cFor your information, it\u2019s my mother\u2019s office paging me.\u201d The remaining three groaned in unison. \u201cBetter luck next time,\u201d Hope called after her, as Abby began her quest for an unoccupied telephone.<\/p>\n
