You’re sweeter than buttercream frosting. You’ll never get in trouble with the law.” She squealed and reached for a cupcake. I placed it out of reach. She had already had a plain pumpkin spice cupcake, and she didn’t need any more sugar. She was twenty months old, going on fifteen years, and thought she knew everything. There was a knock at the front door, and then the door opened. I heard Lucy call out, “It’s just me!”

I swooped Lilly up in my arms, which made her giggle, and I hurried over to Lucy as she walked through the kitchen doorway. “Auntie,” I said, placing Lilly in her arms. “I’m almost finished with these cupcakes. Entertain her.” “Oh, what a sweet girl Lilly is,” Lucy sang out. “We are going to take cupcakes to Granddad.”

Alec had chosen a formal grandpa name, but it fit him perfectly, and at the mention of his name, Lilly blurted out something that sounded close to ‘Granddad’. I chuckled. “That’s right, we’re going to go see Granddad. I’ll have these cupcakes packed up in just a moment.” Lucy leaned over the frosted cupcakes and inhaled. Lilly took a swipe at them, but she pulled her back.

“There’s nothing like the smell of fall cupcakes. They smell delicious.” “Thanks. I think they turned out really well. I’ve got a box for you and Ed, too.” I made it a habit of baking treats for the officers at the police station—or at least I tried to make it a habit, but sometimes my plans fell through the cracks. This would be a treat for them. I quickly placed the cupcakes into bakery boxes and closed the lids on them while Lucy entertained Lilly.

I turned to her when I was done. “I’m all set.” “Then let’s not waste any time,” Lucy said. “Come on, Lilly, let’s go see Granddad.”

Copyright © 2024 by Kathleen Suzette. A crimson-colored leaf drifted down and landed in front of my feet, and I smiled, stepping over it. There was nothing like the fall in New England. “I know what you’re thinking,” Lucy breathed out as we ran slowly. “What?” I glanced at her, brushing a loose whisp of my long red hair from my face.

Lucy was wearing a purple knit hat over her short blond hair. “You’re thinking about all the delicious fall treats you’re going to bake.
