They fought all the time. Melinda always talked down to her. I told Tabitha she needed to stay away from her, but she didn\u2019t listen to me. It was a codependent relationship, if you ask me.\u201d \u201cCodependent? In what way?\u201d I asked. He was giving us the information I had been hoping for. Maybe we needed to talk to Melinda again. \u201cMelinda drinks a lot. I guess I can\u2019t say positively that she\u2019s an alcoholic, but believe me, those kids drive her to drink. And when she gets drunk, she would order Tabitha around, making her run her errands or whatever she wanted, and Tabitha would do it.<\/p>\n

She would tell Tabitha to buy her things or give her money, and for some reason, she would. It was a crazy relationship.\u201d He grabbed the bottle of water on his desk and took a sip, his eyes never leaving me. \u201cIt sounds chaotic.\u201d I took a sip of my water. Chloe nodded. \u201cVery chaotic. It still seems to me that it would be very difficult for a sister to murder her own sister, though. There had to be a relationship there, even if it wasn\u2019t a healthy one.\u201d<\/p>\n

He shrugged. \u201cMaybe I\u2019m wrong. But maybe I\u2019m right. I\u2019ve had a few days to think about this now, and I think it\u2019s entirely possible that\u2019s what happened.\u201d He twisted the lid back onto his water bottle. \u201cI see,\u201d I said, taking this in. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t sound like a healthy relationship at all.\u201d He glanced at his laptop. \u201cWell, I don\u2019t mean to rush you off, but I have another appointment that I\u2019ve got to get to now.<\/p>\n

I sure appreciate you dropping by and bringing me the plant. It looks nice. I\u2019m going to keep it here on my desk. It kind of brightens the room.\u201d I smiled and stood up. \u201cYou\u2019re very welcome. Again, I\u2019m so sorry for your loss.\u201d He stood up. \u201cThanks. I appreciate it.\u201d We left the restaurant, and when we got in my car, I turned to look at Chloe.<\/p>\n

I glanced up at Cookie, the owner of Cookie\u2019s Creamery, and she was smiling as she measured ingredients into an ice cream machine. \u201cOh, goodness, Maddie. I may have outdone myself this time, if I do say so myself.\u201d I nodded in agreement. \u201cI completely agree with you, and I haven\u2019t even tasted it yet.\u201d<\/p>\n

I grabbed a small sample spoon, scooped a tiny amount, and put it in my mouth. I closed my eyes, savoring the delicious, creamy treat. Cookie had been working on this new flavor for a while, and it showed. It had chopped sweet cherries in a cherry base, with bits of walnuts and crispy chunks of cobbler mixed in. \u201cWell, I\u2019ve tasted it enough for all three of us, let me tell you. I couldn\u2019t quite get it right until I added the walnuts.\u201d She poured heavy cream into the machine’s bowl.<\/p>\n

I opened my eyes. \u201cThis is fantastic, Cookie. It\u2019s going to sell like crazy.\u201d \u201cI told her the same thing,\u201d Chloe said. Chloe had been my best friend since kindergarten, and she was Cookie\u2019s daughter. She pulled a tray of fudge brownie cookies from the oven. The kitchen filled with the aroma of chocolate, and I nearly groaned as my stomach growled. I had left the house without eating breakfast. Cookie chuckled.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
