“…not for a while…” Caleb nodded as he approached the hospital bed and looked over Gerry’s stub leg. “…do you want to make your life mean something, Gerry?” “What the hell are you goin’ on about-” Gerry started, reaching for the call remote when Caleb grabbed his wrist. “I mean, you’re not a good person, Gerry,” Caleb said matter-of- factly. “You’re a pathetic, homophobic, bigoted piece of shit that, frankly\u2026<\/p>\n

I’ve wasted a bit too much time on pretending to give a damn about,” Caleb smiled comfortingly. “You have no friends because nobody can stand to be around you. You’ve had several opportunities to turn your life around. Yet, you’ve been content with pushing your misery onto others. You’ve contributed absolutely nothing to this world that you don’t deserve to live in.” Gerry looked at Caleb in shock at his harsh words.<\/p>\n

“Wh-why are you saying this?” “Because I’m giving you an opportunity, Gerry. To finally make something of yourself,” Caleb smiled, grabbing the butter knife on Gerry’s empty lunch plate with a napkin. He gently placed it in his hand. “Everyone is useful. Including you.” Gerry’s eyes widened. “Wh-… what do you expect me to do with this?” Caleb chuckled. “You’re not that stupid, Gerry.<\/p>\n

I think it’s obvious.” But Gerry just blinked at him in pure shock. Caleb sighed. “Here. I’ll help you.” Gerry’s hand trembled as Caleb grabbed his wrist and raised it to his face. “The flesh by your neck is softest and easiest to cut through. If you’re quick, it’ll be over before you know it.<\/p>\n

Or\u2026 you can go for the eye. There’s no bone to block you from penetrating your brain.” Gerry looked at the door, prepared to scream. “There’s no one coming, Gerry,” Caleb said. “I’m the only one who visited you because no one else cares. Just me.”<\/p>\n

I’m going to have to ask you to leave- ” one detective started. “Your Captain has permitted us a moment with Ms. Louis to make sure she is alright,” Ian interrupted. “But, we-” “This is family business. Kindly get the fuck out,” Keith snapped impatiently. The detectives looked at the Donovan brothers, perturbed by their offensively intimidating presence. “We’ll be right outside, Ms. Louis.” Deja didn’t like that the detectives seemed frightened of the Donovans, but she had anticipated that, considering their reputation.<\/p>\n

She didn’t want them to leave, but Keith was already closing the door. Leaning against the door, he crossed his arms over his chest. An uncharacteristically serious expression on his face as he glared at her. Keith had never looked at her like that before. It scared her shitless. Ian approached the bed. His blue eyes darkened, staring down at her, roaming over her injuries. “…are you in pain?” Ian asked. Deja shook her head. “…Not too much. The ibuprofen kicked in…” Ian nodded as his jaw twitched.<\/p>\n

“…what\u2026 happened, Deja…?” She carefully considered her words. “Everything was going well\u2026 Dinner was romantic. But then\u2026 we got into an argument, and\u2026 Jax just\u2026 snapped. He tried to kill me\u2026 and I fought back.” Despite not looking at each other, she noticed both brothers’ facial expressions shift skeptically. “What were you arguing about?” Keith asked. “Returning to the lab.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
