Sometimes for many days at a time. Drinking and drugs was something my brothers and I were never interested in, especially after all we\u2019d seen. How the three of us turned out as well as we did was a miracle. Grandma was strict but not mean.<\/p>\n

She was our dad\u2019s mom, and she tried to help our parents more than once, but they never stayed clean. When Samian was a baby, we got kicked out of the apartment we lived in and that\u2019s how we ended up in that broken-down motor home. No clue where they got it from.<\/p>\n

It was filthy, bugs were everywhere, but without a phone we had no way to call our grandma for help. Heck, I\u2019m not even sure Oscar knew her number or even where to tell her we were if he could call. Oscar protected us from our parents as best he could. Whenever the fights broke out between them, he\u2019d wrap us up and we\u2019d go to the park. That\u2019s where the cops found us that night.<\/p>\n

They asked Oscar where we were living and when they took us home, they made us wait in the police car while they talked to our parents. Whatever they saw wasn\u2019t good because we never got to go back inside. They took us to the police station and Oscar told them everything he knew about our grandma and somehow, they found her.<\/p>\n

As soon as grandma saw us sitting inside the police station she started crying. I\u2019d never been hugged so tight in my life. She spoke to the officer in Spanish, which my brothers and I didn\u2019t speak, so we had no clue what was being said. When we got to her place, she bathed and fed us.<\/p>\n

I swear, that was the best night\u2019s sleep I\u2019d ever had. For the first time in forever I felt safe and my tummy was full. My brothers and I shared a bed for a few days until grandma got us bunks but we were more than okay with that. Oscar was mine and Samian\u2019s rock and we needed to stay close to him until the chaos of our lives settled down. Besides, we\u2019d always shared a bed, so that was nothing new for us.<\/p>\n

Then a few years later, we lost our grandma. It was like life ripped the safety net out from under us. For some reason the powers that be had something against my brothers and me which was likely what triggered my acting out.<\/p>\n

There were times I\u2019d be in total and complete Zen, only snapping out of it at the end of the day as my mind and body slowed down. The hours just fly by when my muse takes over. It\u2019s like being in a dream state while working and I always surprised myself with how good the murals turned out.<\/p>\n

Earbuds in, my mind cleared and the creative juices flowed. The worries drifted away as soon as the brush laid its first stroke. But today wasn\u2019t one of those days. I needed Daddy time. Stat! He-he, I had always wanted to say that. \u201cThought I\u2019d find you in here,\u201d Daddy said as he walked into the playroom. I swear he could read my mind and somehow always knew when life required my Daddy fix.<\/p>\n

\u201cStill having trouble figuring out a theme?\u201d \u201cYeah.\u201d I\u2019d lost track of how much time I had spent sitting in the center of the empty room, envisioning my ideal play space. While I knew where the shelves and toys would go, the walls remained\u2026 blank, as did my mind. \u201cWhy is it so easy to do everyone else\u2019s rooms but my own?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, because they tell you what they like, so you just go in and do your thing. Ever consider decorating your space in more than one theme?\u201d Hmm, that was an idea I hadn\u2019t considered, though that only further added to my lack of vision. Ugh\u2026 Daddy was kind and patient with me, never complained about my toy containers in the family room.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
