Then she stalked off. essica found Meecham on the same bench by the lake. The ducks were once again gathered by his feet, at the water\u2019s edge, crabbily competing for the pieces of bread he would occasionally flick in their direction. \u201cSit down, Detective,\u201d he said wearily as she walked up. \u201cWe’ve got a lot to talk about, you and I.\u201d Meecham looked as though he hadn\u2019t slept. His eyes were swimming in red, the only color in his face. His skin sagged beneath his cheekbones and around his neck.<\/p>\n

His shirt was badly wrinkled, and his suit looked as if it had just come out of the dryer. If he has slept, Jessica decided, it must have been in his . clothes. \u201cYou look like you\u2019ve been on a bender,\u201d she said, only half-joking, hoping she was wrong. \u201cNo such luck,\u201d he said. \u201cI just have a lot on my mind.\u201d<\/p>\n
